Post subject:  Kitbashing Ork Battlefortresses
Since my scratchbuilt Gargant has temporarily stalled, I've decided to turn my attention to making my desparately-outgunned Orks some Battlefortresses.  To that end, I ordered three of these babies:



Axis & Allies Miniatures 15mm tanks, which I got for $2 each from Gamingetc.com.  I'll probably receive them this weekend, and I'll do a little WIP photoshoot here as I attempt to work them up into something worthy of the name "waaagh".  

Of course, I have the attention span of a three-headed rat in a cheese factory and the modelling talent of Flipper the Dolphin (on methamphetamine), but my saving grace will be the fact that Ork vehicles are supposed to look crappified.  I figure I either will save $40 on buying new ones from GW or else I'll have spent $6 on new toys for my anklebiters.

Along the way, I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to make Orky turrets, gunz, etc.

...is that a Pzkw?!? It seems all you need do is paint it red...you know to make it go fast ???...oh,oh and a roller on the front old chap.

Wizards calls it a "Panzer II (F) Flamingo", but it seems to have been called either a Panzerkampfwagen or a Flammpanzer:

I chose them for the look of the track and road wheels, which reminded me strongly of the SG Ork Battlefortress.

Yup, that looks like a PzKfw II Flammpanzer to me! :cool:

Should make for a cool Battlefortress conversion mate.

The easiest way to "orkify" something like that is to take plain old plastic cardstock and glue plates to it and use some plastic tubing to make the gun barrel impractically large.  You can add rivets by several methods - drops of superglue, tiny bits of plastic rod, drill holes as if they were countersunk, or just paint them on.

On the rivet issue, I have a new toy that makes passable rivets by embossing plasticard:

I'll post some pics of my WIP Gargant later to show how they look.  I also have a scratchbuilt Squiggoth that uses some of the same technique.

looks very interesting, so do you use this un the underside of the plasticard then?  Also- how thick can the plasticard be?

Tried the same with thick tinfoil and a pencil, but this looks way easier.

BTW- like the look of the flammpanzer, very Orky

I remember years ago a fellow scratch built a german WWI av7,he used salt for rivets. Of  course this was 1/72 scale though

Yeah, I actually make rivet strips with it, or else cut out panels and make rivets around the edges, which works fine for Orky construction.  

It works best using 1mm thick or less plasticard on a wooden cutting board, which lets the points of the wheel imprint the card nicely without making a crease that runs like a ridgeline down the line of rivets.  I use a steel ruler to guide the pounce wheel so it makes straight rows of rivets.
