I can't make my mind up about basing my vehicles. I like the look but I'm not sure that I like it enough to go to all the effort.

What are people's thoughts on this?

I was thinking about exactly the same think Stu. I decided against basing because I have a rural battlefield (greenery) and an urban battlefield (grey concrete), whatever I based the vehicles on would never match every battlefield. Obviously I have the same problem with my infantry which has to be based, but I've learned to live with that.

you could do what Brumbaer did and use transparent acrylic.... then it takes the colour of whatever table you're on...

clicky

Only base infantry, Artillery, things with legs and such ... generally any vehicles with wheels or tracks, unless its really small ... NO Base ...

I have an all or nothing approach.
As i have to base my infantry and walkers i'll base my vehicles as well to get a consistent look and add more character to them.

Also helps having a clear outline for all your units to avoid measurement arguments. ;)

I base them but then I use magnetic basing for most things.

I like to base. It protects the model, the terrain, makes it easier to transport if you magnetize and I think it brings the army together.

I like to base, especially now that so many options are out there. Like MrGonzo says it provides a clear boundary for measurements and not relying on the model itself which sidesteps a whole range of modeling for advantage discussion. Just go see the asshat conversations at a 40k tourney for what I mean.

They also look perty that way, too :)

Those acryllic bases are a thing of wonder. If only they'd been about 20+ years ago when I started buying Epic. I just couldn't face trying to rip apart all of my stands to rebase them. Definitely a good solution though to my problem.

I know what people are saying about the basing thing for giving clear measurements, and I'm sorry to have to disagree, but I don't really see why measuring to the tip of the vehicle is a problem...

Because anything with a long barrel will potentially be a point of contention., as will anything with irregular details or spikes bits.

Yep i base everything, protection for the model and uniformity of the army. I collect forces for particular campaigns that i am interested in playing so the base will be finished for that battlefield.

That's my philosophy, too.

Wow, thanks for all the responses. Great to see so many opinions, although I don't think I'm any closer to a decision.

It seems the central arguments are:
FOR:
Protects model; Can (if you do it right) look good; Helps with defining the model size on the table.

AGAINST:
Extra work; Can look a little odd depending on the table surface (but you already have this issue with infantry, walkers etc); and one of my own I noticed: often means your army takes up more room on the table. For something like a guard army this can make deployment very difficult.

Let me know if I've missed anything important. I think I'm still sat of the fence on this one for now.
