Hi all, here's some Epic stuff I'm working on at last. Anyone remember my Atlas superheavy? This was based on a spare Shadowsword hull with a short-barrelled cannon with very large bore added. It's in storage, but I'll try to dig it out. I used mine as an armed transporter.
Now someone going by the name of Dafrca decided he liked it, and sacrificed what seems to have been half an army to get his hand on 3 of these beasties. So I've been commissioned to recreate the Atlas. Shadowsword hulls were provided, but I have no more of the cannon which proved to be so useful. So I'm scratchbuilding them instead. And here's a brief how-to thread. For tonight I'll just limit myself to the initial ingredients: the Shadowsword hull itself, and some brass and aluminium alloy tubing.
The tubing will of course be used for the cannon - there's no need to get two different materials, but I wanted two sizes which fitted neatly into each other, and the local shop could only supply these in different materials. I'd never used aluminium alloy tubing before, and was afraid it would be too soft to bash about and cut with a hacksaw, but I've been proved wrong.
Here's a pic of the bits. Next step - preparing the hull for the cannon.

Can't wait to see the results. Of course we've also been waiting to see progress on some other project you have.

The aluminium tubing I'm using for my Siegemaster arty didn't like being sawed at all - I found the best way was just to score it with a VERY sharp knife and then break it, filing down any sharp/jagged bits left.

Hi Stug, that's what I was afraid of - but it turned out that it resisted the hacksaw forces quite well and was cut without any untoward harm. Must have found a tough brand! DS - remember my comment on my upcoming AMTL work? my CI will be in there....

Hi all, easy to see I'm only working on weekends. I filed down some of the detail on the superheavy hull - this is indicated by the red circles in the pic. This will make the fit of the new front plate easier. The front plate itself, on which the gun will be mounted, can be seen next to the tank - just a bit of plasticard cut to size.
The gun barrel parts need to have the end which fits to the hull cut off at an angle. If I had a mitre box I'd have used that to hold the tubing whilst cutting at an angle. As I don't, I could have chosen to cut the angle freehand, and then file it down. But I have a different plan. It needs specialized equipment - or a clever ploy. More later. ?

Good to see some progress, van. If you have access to a bench vise, that can substitute for a mitre box.

Here's the barrel ground away to an angle. Metal may not be easy to file, although brass is a winner. I cheated and used the lab grinding discs - a turntable with abrasive sheet on top, on which the object being ground is pressed. We use them for specimen preparation - and now, gun-barrel grinding.
If anyone has a turntable they don't need, one of these thingies can be constructed - all that is needed is a way of attaching the abrasive sheet to the top. Alternatively, and more practically, an easy way to grind neatly is to fix a sheet of grinding paper (180 grit is suitable for most heavy grinding, with finer grades being good for finishing) onto a flat surface - a piece of board and pins or double-sided tape (for fixing the sheet) are good enough. The object being ground is then rubbed across the surface of the sheet mounted on the board - easier than using a file or a scrap of abrasive paper held in your hand.

One thing I have found that is helpful for doing similar grinding is, believe it or not, a belt sander, of course with the proper grit of paper. I've used a belt sander to grind down some porcelain bath tiles. I needed to take 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch off a bunch of tiles to fit around a new sink and tile clippers don't cut that precisely.
But I digress! Looking good, Van.

True DS - a belt sander would work well.

Vanvlak: You're a mind reader! In my absence I've been tinkering a bit with a similar idea for a Death Korps Ordinatus as well! Basically adding a barrel extension to a Bombard gun and placing it on a Shadowsword chassis with some walkways around the sides and a driver compartment added to the front.

Ah, here we are again. No, that's not mould growing around the barrel, but green stuff....
