Post subject:  Remodel second hand minis or not?

I thought I would solicit some opinions on what to do with a Tyranid army I recently purcahsed.

Let me start by saying that I had grand plans for how to model my Nid army.  The original plan was that infantry would be based facing the short end of a 10x40 base, so they looked like ants following in column.  The color scheme was going to be basic black with red and yellow trim.  For those that have seen the 40K rulebook, very much like the color scheme used on the Nids in there utilizing "danger" color patterns from natural (i.e. Terran) creatures.

It would have rocked.

But now I'm not sure.

The minis I recently bought are 1) based in the traditional style, and 2) well painted with a completely different color scheme.

I originally assumed I would simply dismantle them and rebase/repaint the way I wantd.  Quite frankly, though, they are better than I will do if I repaint them.  It seems a shame to waste quality work.

Right now, I am leaning towards keeping the painted minis as a sub-brood or "variant genotype" or whatever and simply building the rest of the forces like I originally intended.

===

While the specifics of this thread are about Tyranids, I'm sure many other people have faced similar dilemmas with other forces.  Do you paint those Whirlwinds to match your chapter colors, or do you leave the paintjob in place because after all, SM chapters do support each other on the same battlefield from time to time?

IG from different planets, Ork clans, Eldar craftworlds, etc..  They all provide justifications for mixed paint schemes/basing/styles.

I would definitely leave them as is, but I'm split between keeping them as auxilia or painting everything else to match. If you're worried about not being able to match your paint job to them, keep them as auxilia. I guess I'll vote for your last choice.

I like the auxiliary approach.  With millions of worlds in the 40K fluffyverse, there's going to be variation.  This adds to the flavor of your army.

Based on what you have said in your post, I would try and rebase without repainting. That way they would be based to match your overall army scheme, but would retain their "great" paintjob. Then I would think about mixing them into your existing stands as eiher a sub-brood or maybe not try and explain the color variations at all. They just are.

I would bet, that if based to match the rest of the army, the color differances will not be as big a deal for the overall army.

Just my .02 :D

Btw, any idea how to remove based epic mini so that one does not need to cut the mini off from the small plastic disc that they all have?

It depends on how they were glued.

If glued with superglue or the like, you can work them loose.  Cyanoacrylates (superglues) typically have poor sheer strength, so if you can work them loose enough that you can twist it will usually snap free.  Most of the time you can flex the base enough to crack the glue and then twist the model to make it release.

If glued with a model glue made for polystyrene, that actually forms a polymer bond with the plastic of the model.  Unless there wasn't good contact (say, the model was dirty when glued in) you can probably get it free.  If it was glued properly the bond is probably as strong as the model and base.  You would most likely have to cut either the model or the base.

I would heartily agree with this.

To me it sounds like yoru best option is just to reflock (or whatever basing technique you use), so that they match the rest of your forces.

Hi!

I'd leave them as is. You could always try your ideas on models that dont involve a lot of work.

If they are good I would leave as is. Normally I get poor models. These chaps either become proxies for playtesting or go into the brake fluid, get cleaned and get take/cut out of their bases.

I remove from well glued in bases by drilling away the underside and cutting around top. Means you can re-use them.

For me it depends on the condition of the models as to the prep stages.
In your case if they come off bases easily then rebase, otherwise just flock to match.

Generally I repaint models to match my old models. There's been one exception so far: FB shaggoth. But for epic repaint everything and rebase as well.

Though I tend to use original bases so I have mix of old and new bases.

IMO I prefer model painted by myself even if it's not so nicely looking. Though generally stuff I buy has either no painting or crappy painting anyway so I'm not in moral dilema :D

Same here. I once won an auction of "painted" Land Raiders. The previous owner, however, had a pretty loose definition of painted. The only thing he did was paint the treads!

Don't forget to let us know what you end up doing.

Oh and post pictures of the basing idea you shared. I would like to see it once you are done.
