Post subject: | Ideas for quick and easy Epic scale bases |
Was wondering whether anyone had suggestions for quick and easy Epic scale basing. I've got 24 bases to do and want them to look decent but don't have much patience. In a departure from the vanilla green flock I usually use, I've tried PVA glue and Army painter flock but the glue doesn't spread well enough around their feet and the flock seems too large. I really like the Carl's bases in the Ultramarines thread. Any ideas would be appreciated. Has anyone had any joy with the GW textured paints? Can you get a decent effect from them? |

For my highland bases, I used a very, very small flock mixed with yellow static grass (somewhere between 50/50 and 70/30, I think). It breaks it up well and the flock is REALLY small. I've also used just straight yellow static grass over a brown base coat to make a field effect. It worked...OK. The bases aren't that big, so it's hard to really get a "field" effect, but it looks good enough. What are you basing and what color are they? |

That's a very interesting question. I believe I got mine as part of a diorama it at a craft store. The static grass is GW's yellow grass. It's pretty good. I'll post a picture or two tomorrow. |

Pictures would be cool. I've come up wih an idea but will try smaller flock if it goes pear-shaped. I'm basing Ulthwe Guardians on square bases so want to go with something fairly bright and need to stay away from greys. Woke up this morning and thought Id try some Stirland Earth texture paint (having a coffee and a croissant outside GW now ![]() |

Check out my painting blog (link in sig) for examples of textured paint, I really like the GW stuff, the astrogranite in particular is great for bright coloured stuff (my imp fists use it) |

I'm with you on the quick and easy ! Wish i had the time/patience for the mini dioramas often shown around these parts but someone would only put their coffee mug on one mid game anyway :-) I'm also for high contrast basing - tactically crazy of course but i want to both see my paint job and be able to quickly identify my units on the board. Therefore black marrines, blue eldar, red admech and dark grey guard in the desert - the guard are even still wearing their great coats !! ![]() All three armies have been painted slightly differently as i try to devise the ultimate (lazy/efficient) method. My best tips for what they're worth : The GW textured is a great scale for Epic. I used Stirland (sp?) mud for my TOEG 2012 eldar - worked well for me imho : http://www.tacticalwargames.net/taccmd/viewtopic.php?f=119&t=23246 I painted the base around the feet first in Rhinox hide (sp?) (seems to be an almost exact match) which is much easier to place and not dab the mini than the the textured stuff. I also added in some small stones for variety of scale. Quick couple of drybrushes with Khemri (sp?) Dust mixes and you're done. I was also recommended Vallejo textured gell by someone on this board which is very similar, if a little finer, easier to apply and about 1/20 the price (£6 for about a large jam jars worth!) though it only comes in desert and clear. Am assured it mixes with GW paint no problem. I used desert with an Army Painter Soft shade to good effect on my guard infantry and came out great as a sandy desert (sorry no pics yet.) Be aware textured paints eat brushes - use an old one! Finally, if you use sand, stick it on first then spray under coat in an suitable colour - stops it coming back off again as you try to paint it ! |

Nice bases guys! Sorry it's taken me a while to respond - 12 hours shifts (but lots of over-time so not all bad ![]() I should give the textured paint another try. I did use it but found it too time consuming to manipulate around their feet. Maybe the old square bases aren't great for this? I imagine the new ones are easier. The best effect I've gotten so far is using the army painter grass type flock though I'm still not satisfied! So much for this being quick and easy. ![]() |
