Hi all, Bit of advice please. I've acquired some models from ebay which need to have the paint stripped off and then redone. What is the best way of doing this? I was thinking just white spirit bath for them but will that damage the model itself. They are metal but not sure on the implications. Thanks Rob |

I know this question has been asked before. A couple of things you can use are brake fluid and Simple Green. |

Household ethanol is a good paint sytripper which is easy to get hold of. It doesn't do any damage to either plastics or metals. It doesn't strip all types of paint though and can be a bit slow to use. Brake fluid or Simple Green should be very effective but I've never tried it myself. |

I recently had dettol (UK pine-oil disinfectant) recommended to me, and the results were much better than with non-acetone nail varnish remover or brake fluid (for plastic minis, though there's no reason not to use it on metal, AFAIK). ?The only problem is that brushing can create a sticky gunge that's hard to shift. ?That might be solved by simply peeling, or having some hot, soapy water to hand. |

I use Castrol Superclean, which I think is basically the same thing as Simple Green, except it's purple. Be sure to wear some gloves when you strip the paint, that stuff will suck the oil right out of you skin. Also, I've noticed that if I leave metal models in the stuff for an hour or two, then take a toothbrush to them, they come out all nice and shiny - like new. But, If I leave them in overnight, the models come out with an antique-like patina. Sometimes, the metal takes on a tint that matches the color of the paint that covered it. This is especially true when it is a metalic paint. Wierd. |

Thanks all. I'll try a couple of different things then. I know I have some white spirit so I'll try that (normally good for wall type paint) and then I'll try the dettol as there is some under the sink! |

Just used some Simple Green on a plastic Epic Madboy ... soaked it since this AM and then tonight gently used a small tooth brush ... worked great !

My housemates and I have found washing up liquid, such as Fairy, work quite well. Use a 1/4 Liguid, 3/4 water mix in a jug or something and just leave the models to soak for a few days. You can peal of lots of paints straight. Didn't work on enamels though. |

Enderel, you should change your web name to "Shiva, the Destroyer" ! ?  ?And I use nail polish remover and/or paint thinner for metals. ?And I'm working with methods to clean Resin - ie. F/W's Epic over priced, fragile, stuff. ?Soaked in Oxy Clean then brushed with clear water ... I'm thinking brushing with alcohol, then water, then soak in water ? ? But I'm not sure about how corrosive/caustic alcohol vs. resin is ? ?Simple Green may work on resin too ... ?
