I generally use a mix of chaos black, regal blue and skull white. Having blue in the mix works well, particularly for things like Eldar. Here's an example below, see in particular on the Land Raider:


Othertimes I highlight just with shades of grey, if that seems more appropriate, but most often with blue in there.

I use a touch of enchanted blue in with codex gray. While it works just as well to mix up gray with white and black, I find that it's a bit more consistent and quicker just to use the codex gray as a base so I can do black, codex+blue, white+blue, white. black highlights are one of those colors where less really is more. Very subtle shading needs to be done but most of the feel is done in the edge highlights.

I was going to reference Vaaish's recent foray into black.

I personally either use an extreme highlight of space wolves grey (very cartoony, very gw) or have recently picked up Vallejo's Model Colour 'Black Grey' which i then highlight with something similar to codex grey.

Agreed. I use a mix of WGC Imperial Blue and Black (Regal Blue and Chaos Black in Citadel) at 6 by 5 parts for my black base. The blue gives it a depth and prevents it looking plain and flat. I call it, "reflective black" and I use it so much I have pre mixed dropper bottles of it here at the house.

I'm lazy and just do Codex Grey edge work, followed by a Badab Black wash to dull the brightness of the grey. At 6mm scale it's enough for me and saves me the massive time sink to shade black parts - especially when I'm doing 3-4 colour levels for the main colour!

The colour you use to highlight the black is going to give it a different visual composition and shine. If you look at various black items in the real world you'll see that they can vary from deep green to bright blue.

A flat, deep green in a black highlight can make something look like rubber and a bright blue highlight can make the same base colour seem like shiny, sharper material.

If you are doing black armour then the various blue suggestions are great but I often highlight tires etc with green to make it look different than my metallic or "harder" black armours.

my standard "not quite black" recipes are as follows:

Paynes Grey basecoat with light Greatcoat Grey (p3) drybrush

Cryx Bane Base (p3) basecoat with 2 Badab Black washes (sometimes i mix in a little black ink instead of doing two washes but the effect is the same)

and for smaller stuff, i tend to just go black basecoat followed by a greatcoat grey drybrush and sometimes a codex grey lighter drybrush aswell

That particular bit is actually two pieces that come from the Space Marine Vehicle Accessory "C" sprue. I've seen them primarily on Predators, if that helps.
