Hi,
As you know, I've been working on my longhorn units and now I'm at an crossroads. After trading, buying and selling my soul to the dark gods :p I've finally got enough chaos marines to make 2 tactical and 1 devastator dets.
Tac squads have 9 marines and 1 dev models each while the dev has 6 marines and 4 devs, usual mix.
Now when buying commanders(cpts, chaps and lbrns) do you create a seperate stand or incorporate them into the unit permanently? The reason I am asking is I'm trying to ration my marines to optimise my forces
Here are two examples of what I'm contemplating, one seperate commander and one with stand.

I generally have a mix of Characters in with the units, as how I would usually take them.  I like the way the unit can stack up normally and seem more cohesive that way.

Special Command Stands, like IG Colonels, SM Chapter Masters etc I have done / will do on different style bases to make them stand out more

As for myself, I have a stand w/ a commander and a stand w/o, for example, my SM Termie Det is 4 stands of 5 and 1 stand of 4 plus a chaplin, and i swap that "command" stand in and out.

Mostly in, really.  I've found that my chaplan is a must have for my termie det and you might find your commander is a must have for yours.

You might consider putting him on the stand, and if you end up not wanting to pay the points for him, just tell your opponent "Ignore this guys fancy get-up, I didnt pay points for an upgrade."

Or blu-tac him on? :p

We base one "Leader" and 4 troops ... in some cases one leader, one banner/guidon, 3 troops.  And with the new E:A C-packs, sometimes 2-3 various commmanders plus 2-3 troops, ie.: Commander, Commissar, Banner, 2 troops ... for example ...

Hi!

I am increasingly liking the idea of basing command units on circular bases to make them stand out. They look very nice.

Yes they are very pretty, but usefull too when you have a short number of troops  :8:

They can be used to put special characters or special objectives (example a enginier team that must be recued)

Thanks Guys,
I'm negotiating a trade right now for more marines but the guy seems kinda hesitant. So depending on the outcome I will probably follow Bans example, which by the way are excellent.

Well since Characters are infantry and infantry is described as a stand with anywhere between 3-7 models on it you are going to have to add a couple of troopers on your stand if you wanna keep it legal. If you are playing friendly games and your mates don't mind then do it however you want.

Well I did some independent stands for a capt, lbrn and chap. I think they came out good. I still need to finish up the rest of the force then its off on a crusade.
