Greets all.

I'm close to starting on my Tau army, which is of course all FW resin, and am looking for tips and advice on the beginning stages as I've only painted 3 resin pieces before (2 Marauder Destroyers and 1 Reaver) so my experience is limited.

I usually soak all my pieces in concentrated (un-diluted) Simple Green and rinse well after I've removed flash but before assembly.  Resin pieces I soak for at least 24 hours.

My paint scheme is going to be mostly black with shadow grey for some panels and dark grey highlights on the black.(There is a example of this in the Tau 40K Codex, showcase section I think)   As I dont want to lose the detail in the excellent FW models I only want to spray one color, probably black primer, but I've considered using the GW Shadow Grey spray as my base coat and painting the black areas by hand, which would allow me to leave the seams and details of the model in shadow grey so they would stand out.

I Guess the questions are:
A.  What do you guys use to Prime Resin (and Plastic and Metal)?
B.  Can I use one of the GW non primer sprays as a first coat on Resin (and Plastic and Metal)?
C.  Is it wise to use one of the GW non primer sprays as a first coat on Resin (and Plastic and Metal)?

P.S.  I know the FW site reccomends car body primer, I'm looking for more opinions.  Resin aint cheap!   :alien:

I do the following: first remove flash. Then soak in water + dishwasher liquid for some time, then rinse with a toothbrush.

Assembly after cleaning, but before priming. Many of the Epic Tau models benefit from pinning. I also drill holes in the vehicle undersides (for custom-built hover bases) at this stage.

Cleaned and assembled models get lined up on a piece of wood with blu-tac and spray-primed. I use Talens matte black spray and have had mixed results with it. It seems to be better than Citadel Chaos Black spray. After this is dry, I fill in the spots I missed with an airbrush and some Vallejo Model Air black. The models are now ready for painting.

The main problem with FW resin models is that primer wouldn't stick, no matter what. I started rinsing the models with a toothbrush in water+dishwasher liquid, which may or may have helped; I'm not quite sure. I still get this, but I think less than I used to.

That's odd - the primer I used DID adhere - and very well, too! I have so far sprayed only 40K models - and without washing them too! :D
I used  car undercoat spray - matt white - for both models painted so far, and had no problems. Keep it thin, and DON'T try satin or gloss - it's usually thicker. Matt black should work ok, but try it on a piece of extra material first.

I've soaked my F/W Tau, IG, etc. in detergent.  I may "paint" them with alcohol then rinse again.  Had no problem after washing & scrubbing my F/W buildings.  I may brush paint my F/W Tau, IG, etc. with thinned flat enamel to prime.  But big models like buildings were/will be sprayed.  Armorcast (resin) suggests Krylon spray paint.  That should work on big pieces.  But on Infantry and smaller vehicles (MBTs, APCs, AFVs, etc.,) I'm going to use Testors/Modelmaster thinned enamel brushed on ... after a detergent bath and maybe an alcohol wash ...         :;):

I've used any primer sold at Walmart for plastic/resins and they work fine.

I used Citadel sprays, and I usually wash as well.
