Hi, all:

I'm getting back into Epic after nearly 8 years out, and find I'm up against a problem I never expected to face:face GW doesn't make primer anymore. (Despite the suggestion of the "friendly" salesman, an undercoat of spray paint is not the same thing.)

What do people here prime with?

I used Armory primer through most of the 80's, and was never really happy with it. Most of the time it was OK, but mre times than I liked it left a ver rough texture. GW primer, after I paid through the nose for it once in an emergency, never gave me that problem.

I took a trip to an auto parts store, but all they had was grey and clear. I don't want grey. Clear might be OK, followed by an udercoat of black or white, but I'm a little nervous about using a spray primer I can't see go on.

I might find better auto primer at a bigger store, but I thought I'd ask for advice here first.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

GW still produce both white and black primer.

I use the Army Painter stuff; slightly better value for money, and it comes in glorious colors.

Like Parintachin I have switched from GW spray primers to Army Painter spray primers: slightly cheaper and gives good coverage.

army painter black and white are a few quid cheaper than the equivalent GW sprays round my neck of the woods, coloured primers are about the same.... I'll heartily recommend the coloured primers, they are truly wonderful

You can get black white and gray auto-primer in the bigger stores.

I actually guite like painting on grey, but each to their own.

+1 for Army Painter, although I am not a big fan of their black primer as it comes out a bit shiny. I use GW black for models that are going to stay black, but AP black is fine for anything else.

I also use Army Painter's colored primers. I heard people use Krylon brands, but I havent had the courage to try yet.

On a similar(ish) note, is there a primer available that suits Tau? (I'm thinking the standard 'tan' colour scheme) See attached...

Thanks!

Army Painter Desert Yellow is pretty much that colour. Their Warpaints range of acrylic paints has a 100% match for it as well.

Personally, I've found that Krylon works great. It is a very smooth paint, and if you don't soak your models (ie spray them lightly, like you're supposed to) detail is not obscured.
