I've just started work on my Black Legion army again but I'm a little stuck on the Daemon Prince. How big should this be? Is it just slightly bigger then a normal Marine or more Avatar sized?

Many thanks!

I can remember something from the current 40k Chaos codex saying that (in 'real world' terms) a daemon prince is AT LEAST 10 foot tall.

So, I guess, you could make it avatar size if you wanted, or double a normal marine.  Lots of scope there for your imagination to run riot! :D

Im hoping there is a fair bit of leeway in size, as I (and I suspect many other old school players) am using the old Primarch figures for the most part, which are basically 28mm scale infantry, so they are huge! It certainly makes them stand out...it also makes figures reasonably easy to get as you can buy the old ones off ebay or use the daemon prince figures from Warmaster, which are quite nice.

It varies. In 40K, your army commander can start off as a Marine, and then be gifted with 'Daemonic Stature'. I take this to mean that he could be anything from a small Imperial Guard with a lot of luck, to a huge Daemon Prince the size of a Greater Daemon. Just go wild.

Always thought those old D/Princes and G/Deamons are too big ! ?We use the old WHFB/40K Familiars for Greater Daemons and some of the old SM1 metal commanders as Primarchs. And will replace those with an extra E:A Librarian or two . ?I think some of the Warmaster models would make great Daemon Princes !  Big but not too big !  }:)

'How many angels dance on a pinhead?' has been replaced by 'How much of one demon can fit on an Epic base?' :p
OK - I'm old school and wouldn't mind a demon the size of a 28mm troop-sized model.

GDs in line with the actual background are being considered, i.e. huge monsters able to wade through a large portion of an army single-handedly.

Basically, it would be similar to the Avatar in the Eldar list where even though the 40K abilities and model are scaled for 40K and WAY out of line with the background, the Epic version is massively larger and actually in the proper style. :D

In answer to the daemon prince question, CS got it right.  It's any size you want.  Just keep in mind that it is still an infantry model.

Personally, I based my DP for my TSons on a Minotaur model.  He's on a 25mmx35mm base with 4 termies (I figure 3+RA should have a lot of tough gits represented).  He attracts visual attention on the battlefield but doesn't look like he ought to be targetted by AT weapons.

Hi!

I like them "big". They are centerpieces of a chaos army and its appropriate they be huge lumbering monsters.

We also use an old SM1 metal Eldar commander for our Avatar ...  The E40K (We were going to use him !) and E:A versions were too big for us also ! These will become statues for terrain set or sold ! :D  I know there are a lot of Godzilla fans here, but 40K/Titan size figs on our Epic board don't work for us !  :)  L4SoTR Epicomms Rule #1: Always do what works for you (but I might make fun of ya regardless !) :p :;):

Yeah, I was planning to do a Demon Prince too and was looking for alternatives from the Warmaster range, but not having them in front of me and relying on the images in books are well annoying.

But then I abadoned the Chaos for a while... so will be nice to see what you come up with.

I'd make them slightly smaller than the Chaos Daemons myself just to reflect their status. But yeah, I like them big hehe

Hi Guys,

They're all full of "magic" so they can change size! :p

The original Epic ones were about an inch to an inch and a half tall.

The Warmaster ones are slightly larger.

I would think that any figure in the range of about one to three inches would be just fine.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Thanks for the help!

I'll try out a conversion first of a 1985 chaos guy with some dragon wings and see if that feels ok. Pics will follow if I can find my camera. :D

The WM GDs are significantly bigger.  I'd say close to 30%.  If you look at the pictures, they are mounted on WM bases, 20mmx40mm, and look like they are taller than the base is long.

Some of the WM heroes would definitely work as good DPs, though.  They are larger than a normal WM trooper, but significantly smaller than the GDs.  At a guess, I'd put them at 12-14mm, maybe the size of the old familiar GDs which everyone likes.  They should be about right for a DP imho.  Glue a couple troops on the base with them as a retinue and you're all set.

I haven't looked at all of them, but at least for the Tzeentch heroes, one of the heroes looks like a miniature daemon.  If you want something in scale with the older familiars, it should be about right.

Hi!

WOW!

It never occured to me they were THAT big. I always thought I could use them as proxies, but at that scale they'd look too out of place.

Thanks for the additional info Neal. :)
