Post subject:  Returned, rebuild and see what I found

Space Marine is the first miniatures game I played - and I loved it.
When it changed to Epic whatever, my love waned and I finally stopped playing.
My local gaming group started playing Epic some month ago and I fought hard not to be drawn in. But as they say "resistance is futile", and I found myself considering an army.
I had miniatures of all armies way back when, but my main force was a big Imperial army. Nonetheless I decided on Space Marines for my new career in Epic, as there seemed to be so many Imperial players already.
So I took stock of my old SMs - and that's that:

But looking at the miniatures, I thought: "I can do better than that and the Epic 40k Landraiders look so much better" and I set out to paint a new force. For personal reasons I decided to paint them as Lamenters.
After a week of painting, if have got a "box full" of newly painted Marines sans heraldic:

Now it's time to see what to paint next. And while I dug into my stores I found that:

Its an GW model of the landing bark, I do not know whether it ever got into production or not, but I just wanted to show it anyway.

PS
I know I should talk to my analyst about paining armies in the colour of my furniture/carpet.

Clear bases look great, very jealous of your landing craft :)

Great new paint job, subtle, subdued, but not overwashed and dark.
The clear bases are brilliant, kinda want to steal that idea, since I spend as much time basing as painting, and those just look cool.
The dropship, well you are fortunate to have that, I always thought it was larger though.
Excellent all around, really nice.

Wow! I'm envious I the Drop Ship! And the scale of your armies is magnificent. First time I've seen Lamenters - good choice.

That landing barge is awesome! Looking forward to you getting some paint on it.....

What the others said too, the paint scheme you've gone with looks really effective.

Cheers

Thanks, for all the interest and replies.

I use transparent bases for at least 8 years. It looks nice, adapts to any terrain and saves flocking and painting the bases :)
I've got an CNC milling machine and so I can make them at home. On a good day without any hassle, but I do not want to talk about the bad days.
The material is cast acrylic glass. The cast variety is more expensive than the "ordinary" extruded acrylic glass, but the edges will be cleaner and it will not splinter or break, when milled, sawed or drilled.

For Epic I have different types of bases, one for each "category" of model. Dimensions fit into an 4 mm grid.
Infantry bases and other bases with a "socket" have 1 mm deep grooves for the miniatures sockets and the vehicle bases have 0.1 mm grooves for the tracks. You could mount the vehicles directly on the surface, but with the grooves they are much easier to position and don't slide around, while the glue is still moist and any excess glue will be kept in the groove and will not spill on the surface.
All bases have a hole which will be hidden under a model. The holes take magnets, so the army can easily be stored. The magnets fit snugly into the holes, so it's enough to press them in - no glue required.
That's what they look like: The infantry base has the magnet already inserted.

Regarding the Drop Ship - as I found out, it is called:
I was quite enthusiastic, when I discovered it. But after the first excitement is gone, I'm not so sure what to do about it. Scale wise it's way off - like the very old Thunderhawks - so it doesn't really fit and I probably wouldn't use it in a battle anyway. On the other hand it's a really cool model.
I sleep on it.

It'd make a good inquisitorial gunship.

did the lamenters get involved with the Ordos at any point?

EDIT: And like all - clear bases! genius.

awesome work!

love the bases too, i reckon that could be a god seller too if someone wanted to replicate that effect at the right price

@brumbaer: sent you a PM regarding your bases ..

Post subject:  Re: Returned, rebuild and see what I found

As the question comes up repeatedly:

Basically I can make any shape - there are limitations imposed by the diameter of the milling bit (2 mm) - e.e. a 1 mm slit is not possible.

The material cost including magnet is not prohibitive about 0.25€ for an Infantry base and 0.50€ for a Landraider base.

But if i would do it for somebody whose not a friend, it would be business, so my time would have to be paid and that's the rub.

Depending on the amount of cleaning up that would be necessary, this would increase cost to 4 probably 5 € per base. More for custom designs as there is additional time needed to create the "CNC files" and test the design.

I'm sure there are some out there, who would be willing to pay even that much, but it might make more sense to look for somebody who can produce them more cheaply
and in the first place is more keen on doing so than me.

Stephan
