Filing infantry?

As all of you surely know, the infantry bases won't fit into the little round holes designed for them. They never, ever do.

Did anyone come up with some smart way of solving this problem which doesn't involve filing every single freaking base?

Also, what about infantry mould lines? Do you leave them, or do you file every single little soldier too  :O  ?

Hi Magnus,

With two little snips you can make them fit. Fill in the gaps with glue or flock.

I use an Xacto knife to trim mould lines.

And I find that the rectangle bases do seem to fit most infantry. The older square ones don't seem to fit the newer plastics.

I do exactly what Maksim does... New rectangle bases are fine for the new infantry... old square bases you need to trim them.

I trim mold lines with a new and sharp knife - then maybe do some minor touch ups with a file.

I do not worry that much about it and just clip off what I need to. If you are basing them, it will cover any slight imperfections anyway. :p

Now wait just a minute... are you telling me you manage to eliminate that annoying mould line which goes all around the miniature with a knife :O ??

God, my manual dexterity skills must really suck :{

I do file each trooper so that he fits into the hole better. I even file down the base of bikes and land speeders so that it's sloped. It can be time consuming, but to me it's worth the time. I do agree that the rectangular bases are a better fit than the old square ones.

As for the round mould lines, I haven't worried about it. I figured that once I get around to flocking them, it will hide the imperfections.

I didn't explain myself very well.... I was asking not only about the bases, but about the actual mould lines on the miniature too. You know, that little annoying line appearing on the shoulder pads and leggings of the old style plastic SM.... do you file that too? It takes ages....

I don't bother with those. You're right, it would take forever to file those down! :D  I'm usually only concerned if there is something on the head, like when the mini is attached to the sprue at its head and feet.

If it's bad enough that I want to fix it, I give it a quick scrape with a craft knife.  That generally works in one pass.

I can't file effectively to save my life, I use a modling knife to get rid of the mould line. My most hated mould line incidentally is on the head of the original plastic guardsman. *shudder*
However they all go into their bases fine!

Just occasionally headless, otherwise fine...... (sorry Chris, couldn't resist). I'm currently having big problems with my Hat 9that's the name of the co.) Dacians (1/72 scale) - the plastic is VERY soft, and it tends to fray when filed and make a worse mess. My knife skills are miserable (or perhaps I needed a new blade), but now I intend to try some very fine abrasive paper we use for specimen preparation here at Univ. the joys of research.....
