It seems to be a very common problem among us old salts that there is a preponderance of boyz and a severe lack of grots. I tried to convince Jervis that the new Ork sprues needed to have more grots than a multiple-of-warband number in order to accomodate upgrades, but alas, it was not to be.
So...
Has anyone come up with a grot proxy model that they particularly like?

I've attempted to make bases of squigs, using BB pellets (which come off as giant squigs...), and rolled up balles of green stuff. I aint been that keen on the results, but someone with superior modelling skills may be able to produce something decent...

Hi Guys,
There was the idea awhile back to make "rice Grotz."
Seriously, I would use the smaller original Ork models as Grtoz if you can't get anything better. Paint them distinctly and they'll do the job.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

I can't bring myself to use rice grots.
I have been using the older minis to "stretch" my grots stands. Typically, it's 3-4 grots, 1 old boy, and 0-1 "character" models to represent minders and such.
I still find it really hard to stretch them very far, especially considering that I have a shortfall in the dozens of stands compared to the lists I want to build.
I hadn't thought of the idea of using a mix of squig and grot stands, though. That could provide some substantial stretch.
Any ideas on materials (besides bb's)? I wonder if something like poppy seeds could work - large enough to be distinguished from base flock/texture, but small enough to look in scale?

I almost think there is something wrong with the list that they are so important |
I understand your view, but I think the grot benefit is often overstated. I crunched the numbers at one point using a bunch of different situations and the grots add ~+0.5 to the assault resolution per grot in base contact or at the front of a firefight, with a range of somwhere from +0.35 to +0.65, depending on the exact situation. Given the slow speed of infantry, I wouldn't expect that to ever top +2 resolution mod, even in the largest warbands.
Definitely nice, but not the uber-bonus it is sometimes portrayed as.
I just like them. I'd like to build a Deth Skullz army with hordes and hordes of grot lootaz, but until/unless I find a viable proxy, it just ain't gonna happen with the current model availability.

You will note I only made one stand to be funny?.

How about small grain Tapioca? That would be round and the starchy outside of uncooked would hold the paint?
Just a thought.

Quote (Markconz @ 13 2005 July,22:06) | How about going for an absolute maximum of 3 grots per base, and fill the rest out with runtherdz etc, and even leave some at 3 per base - eg a runtherd and two grots. The squig idea is a good one too. | Hi Guys,
I think Markco has a good point.
Base fewer models on your stands. This looks fine especially if you use a circular stand like a 3/4" fender washer or a small coin.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.
