Post subject:  To base, or not to base?

Hello, my first post on this forum (having transferred from the now sadly defunct fanatic forum).

I've been making a start at painting an Iron Hands Space Marine force (one of 5 epic armies I'm working on!) - I'll post some pics once they're done... don't hold your breath!  :;):

Anyhoo, I've put the land raiders and predators (still waiting for rhinos in the post!) on square/rectangle bases - either the straight epic stands stuck together or Warmaster stands cut to fit.

For my Ork and Imperial Guard armies I've stuck vehicles to 1p & 2p coins (that's GBP!   ).  So, anyway, this has got me wondering what other Epic players do in terms of basing their miniatures?  Coins, metal washers?  Plasitcard?  Round or right-angled?

What's your preference?  Do coins scratch up your gaming boards?

Lets hear your opinions!

Welcome Firestorm 40K. I don't get many Epic opponents here in Malta, so I'm afraid I don't have scratching problems (other than with cats...). I usually use any of the range of GW or similar bases for troops, light artillery, Dreads, etc. I'm basing my Tyranids on 40K bases or the old Epic squares, as these clusters represent the Nids better than a line of troops - to me, anyway. As to tanks, I usually don't base these, with basing returning again for all walkers up to Titans.

In my opinoion all models should be based. That is one of the things with painting minis and being in this hobby, to create fun and cool and artistic bases.

But thats my opinion. I dont like the rectangles, firing squad, bases. In my mind space marines dont stand on a line in battle, they sally forth and let loose the emperors wrath on round bases made from washers.

I do not base vehicles and find that to do so would take too much time and money at this point. :;):

I will leave that to those who have small armies.

I started off basing everything then stopped and took all the vehicles off the bases.  I think it looks better. Plus you get more done if you don't have to make bases for every vehicle.

Hi!

While I only base infantry, and some single model units (like dreadnoughts), I think they all should be based. Some of the examples shown on the forums of based vehicles look just lovely.

Welcome to the forums!

I'll qualify my last statement - I agree some of them look lovely as display pieces, but in an actual game I don't like the look of them.

Hi!

Why? Some of the example I saw, the bases were pretty, but functional looking as well.

Is it just an aesthetic dislike of it?

Mind you, while I like them, I could never base them all, cost and time prohibitve for me. :;):

I guess because it makes vehicles look like they are riding around on a magic carpet of raised turf... unavoidable with infantry stands - but completely unneccessary with most vehicles.

Hi!

Never looked at it that way, but you have a point. They look more realistic and blend into the terrain used when "baseless".

Good and interesting point. :)

I think we are in the same place when it comes to this.  :;):

First of all, welcome firestorm!

Second, I prefer not to put my vehicles on bases, to save time. All of my walkers, from sentinels up to titans are/will be on bases. For those that didn't come with a base I have used pennies for some things, old square bases for others.

Well... as realistic as 6mm scale tanks and sci fi war machines can!  :D

But I know what you mean.  For me, it's an asthetic thing, I also like the consistency because infantry and Titans are based, so why not Tanks and other vehicles?

Hi!

Nope, the cost alone would bankrupt me....  :;):
