As probably many have you have already figured out, a great part of the fun for me of playing and modelling Epic is making conversions and finding/converting proxies for models that don't yet exist.
Having run a game with Tyranids at CONQUEST 2003 (and still needing to finish writing the battle report), I spent a tremendous amount of time building and painting Tyranids, which led me to thinking about Tyranid proxies/conversions...
Please feel free to comment or add to the ideas:
--------------------------------
Expectorator - (a large Biovore) - I like the old Biovore model. It would be really easy to remove the front "spindly" legs and add in other arms (I was thinking of Dactylis arms). It is a smaller model and would look good as a: (a large Biovore). - Karl Woodrow used a new Biovore model to make a Tyranid Bio-Titan that looks great: Dropship 40k EPIC: Bio-Titan conversion - I like the new Biovore, but the model is a tad big to be just a: (a large Biovore). I prefer the smaller older Biovore model.
Hydraphant - (basically a ?neutered? version of the Dominatrix) - This one puzzles me. why would Tyranids even need a "neutered version of the Dominatrix?" - I always thought that they reproduced asexually even though they borrowed the "queen" idea from the insect world. I guess I must be wrong. - I have little idea how to convert a Hydraphant. - Maybe use the Dominatrix body without the little "controller" guy in his cradle. Model a good Tyranid lump in the back where Mr. Cradle used to be.
Mycetic Spores - I like the old iea of adding a little "slime" to walnut shells. - Another neat idea is to use old "spore mines" left over from the Biovore purchases to use as Mycetic Spore markers. I don't know if this is a good idea, but I'm throwing it out for everyone's perusal.
Ravener - This is the model that got me thinking about Nid conversions. It's so easy to do. Simply mount some Ripper Swarm models individually on small coins or disks. I mounted some old plastic Ripper Swarm guys on some US pennies and am VERY pleased with the results. - Voila! - Instant Ravener models!
Synapse Node - This is almost like a terrain feature, based on the spore chimney?s made by Forge World. It can?t move or attack after is appeared, by can act as a synapse creature for a swarm, and can be used to spawn more Tyranid creatures. - Good Idea for Tyranid Node Model - Originally posted by Markconz: Just an idea about what to use for these... Three Devourer guns from the 40k Gaunts box would make a good looking Spore Chimney. Few 40k Tyranid players use the Devourers so they would be easy to pick up cheap. 18 in a box = 6 Hive Nodes. |
Vituperator - (A larger version of the Harridan) - I have been planning to build some unique conversions of the Harridan since the Tyranids came out for SM-TL, but I guess when I build them they'll become Vituperators now! - One of the ideas is to use the Dominatrix head on the Harridan. It has a long gangly look that would be fun to play with. - The old 28mm Gargoyle wings and stinger bottoms would also be good fodder for conversions. - I've also thought about adding on a good arm or two (such as the ever popular Dactylis arms!). - There are other head swaps that I've considered as well such as using the original Ripper Swarm heads.

I totally dig the Biovore-Hierodule conversion. That's awesome! ?
I'm off to go surf for other 40K scale stuff that might work.

I wasn't really thinking of making one that big, but it is an impressive idea!
I more or less wanted to keep the Harrdians about the same size, but make them unique.

Markco,
Yeah, I love the Bio-Titan! |
Carl Woodrow is a genius! He's pretty friendly too. I E-mail him on occasion.
I hear from 40k Nid players (I've got a 40k bug army too) that new Genestealers are about to be released... will be interesting to see what they do with them. |
It's about time. The old plastic nes are getting pretty dated.
I think a new codex and other bug sets are being released too, there are rumours of a plastic Carnifex.
I like this. A plastic Carnifex would make great conversion fodder.
One of my local Epic Tyranid players used an old metal Carnifex to make a really cool Bio-titan. It's amazing how good it looks. It's more or less a Carnifex body face down with goodies sticking out of it. The original legs were left off and the Carnifex claws have become the legs!
Cool idea, no?
I like the Ravener idea, Maksim. I have heaps of Rippers I haven't used. I keep thinking up good ideas for the Nids... just too busy to implement them for the next few months.
I'm pretty proud of that one. It's such a cool and simple proxy!
Ah well, back to essay writing!
I commiserate. I remember those days well!
Shabbat Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Primarch and gang,
I like that giant Harridan idea too, sorta like a floating aircraft carrier that could carry lots of Gargoyles! |
Speaking of Harridans, the new Forgeworld version has hit prerelease.
Forgeworld Pre-Orders Page
As well as a ton of FW Eldar Falcon variants.
Shabbat Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

I think I'm going to get a box of the Tyranid Warriors for 40K scale. Using an idea similar to the biovore and carnifex ideas above, I think that box will have enough bitz to make 2 biotitans, with lots of bits left over. Plus, it'll have 5 rippers to use as raveners (kudos on that idea).
Both would have a horizontal posture. One would use 4 of the Warrior legs and use the scythe limbs (maybe 2 sets) for the hth weapons. The other would use the remaining 2 legs, with the large "monstrosity" scythes for the forelegs and additional scythe limbs and/or other bitz for the hth weapons.
I suspect the 4-legged version would require some chopping of the forelegs to make it look right. I was thinking that using one of the larger arm sets for the upper part and the hooves from the legs for the lower part would give an appearance that was much like a 4-legged mammal, where the elbow is up near the torso and the lower portion of the leg is elongated.
2 biotitans and 5 raveners for $30 is a pretty good price.

One of my local players has used that box to make BFG ships different from the ones in the magazine.
They look good.

Thanks. I'm pretty proud of the idea.

Sounds good. I'd like to see photos of your work.
I suspect the four-legged version would require some chopping of the forelegs to make it look right. I was thinking that using one of the larger arm sets for the upper part and the hooves from the legs for the lower part would give an appearance that was much like a four-legged mammal, where the elbow is up near the torso and the lower portion of the leg is elongated.
It sounds all right.
Two Bio-Titans and 5 Raveners for $30.00 USD is a pretty good price.
I agree!
Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.
