Hi

I have slowly continued working on my Epic Ork army. After an intial spurt doing Evil Sunz I switched to doing some Goff's for variety. For Goff's I tried a mixture of either gunmteal or black for main colour, with black and white checks and red for splash of colour.

By basing them in same way as my Evil Sunz, and by using same shade of red, I hoped that this would give me enough colour coherency to mix and match the Evil Sunz/Goffs as various formations in same army. That way Goffs would include Gargants, Stompas and Dreads, whilst the Evil Sunz would naturally include load of bikes and skorchas and also blitz brigades.

I have been working on a Great Gargant, 10 Stompas, 9 Flakwagonz and 2 Big Mek Zzap guns. I think they are nearly finished and wanted to get some feedback before I varnished them.

Do you think they need anything more done to them before I varnish ready for tabletop?

I would say since you used so much metal instead of "painted" surfaces a little rust was called for. or you could add lots of grots with polishing cloths ? :)

thats what i would do, but I bet someone else on here can give you a better technique, some of the other board members do great weathering. I still think you have to squint at my miniatures to get them to look good. :)

I mix my own rust color up, you can see it on my deathguard army in this forum. i do 1 part blazing orange 1 part bestial brown and 1 part blood red. and water until your happy with the consistancy i usually do 2-3 drops.

Are you kiding, they look fantastic man. Your color scheme works. You took the time to do all those highlights by hand... i don't have the patience for that. Well done sir.

OK thanks- they did nt quite come out as well as I had hoped so was a bit unsure about them.

I have been working on them sporadically for last couple of months. Not sure how long they have taken me but they have dragged a bit. I was worried that i would do my usual and lose interest part way through and end up half finished. This time I tied to persevere.

I do my rust starting with a coat of tin bitz, then mixing some chainmail into it and covering most of the surface, I then use chainmail to 'sharpen' the edges of the panels

I used it extensively on this ogre I painted for a comission:

Tin bitz would work well if starting off from black undercoat. And certainly a method I used on my Iron Warriors before main coat of bolt gun metal. But in this case i already have the metal areas painted- started with mix of tin bitz, black and bolt gun metal (to get a very dark gun metal colour) before highlighting up with bolt gun and finally mithril silver.

Once they are finished I have another pair of Great Gargants and a Gargant that are part painted. Plus some battlewagonz and some Gunwagonz/Big Mek Zzap Guns that have been undercoated and based.

I wouldn't recommend using a metallic paint to simulate rust. Rust tends to be more in the brown and red end of things and it's also usually a flat rather than shiny specularity.

Using a wash of a brown like delvan mud also doesn't really convey rust. It tends to give a look more like old grease or heat discoloration on a metal like boltgun. If you target the wash and drag it a bit away from things like bolts it can give a sort of oily run feel.

The method I'd use would be to hit crevases with something like Dark Flesh and then add in a layer of blazing orange on the top to create the bright rust. It's been a bit, but I used this on my Guard superheavies and vehicles.
