OK. Another idea, and another cheap shot at getting you guys to do my work and put some web site articles for me!  :D

I was reading Fanatic Mag 5, looking through Neals threads on the Thousand Sons armour, and glancing at 'Squat week', and things fell into place. I really like the articles by Audrey, but since the Defiler requires six claws from a GW mini that has been impossible to find for about eight years, they are really more of an interesting curiosity than a guide. And, I thought, the EpiComms guys could probably come up with some interesting ideas. So, my proposition...

The Brief

We theme build a unit. Anyone who is interested gets to work on a specific unit or vehicle from the game, and we post the instructions and results here. Then, I compile them all together, and we have an article for each unit, with a number of ideas to build them, which allows both new and old players to plug the gaps which will undoubtably result from the reorganisation of Fanatic.

The Specifics

Firstly, we put our heads together to compile a list of units and minis which either Games Workshop will not make, or which we would like to find alternative minis for. We can use this thread for that, just post your ideas as a reply here and I will gather them all up and put the list together.

Then, we set aside three weeks focussing on one of the suggestions, during which anyone who has an interest can build and construct that specific unit for the game. Anyone who wants to, should start a new thread for their own construction, giving pictures and a parts list and instructions. Each thread should have the subject prefix of 'Workshop' and I will pin them as I see them. Others can also comment on the ideas and constructions. At the end of the three weeks, I gather all of the threads together, unpin them, and we move right on to the next unit.

The Guidelines

This is where I need to be a bit careful. There are a number of guidelines that I would like to see used in the construction process:

- All parts should be currently available, so no bits that are impossible to find. It is very irritating to find that the person has used a bit that is no longer available.

- All parts should be drawn from the Games Workshop range and catalogue. Most people are just more familiar with the GW range and it should all fit the theme.

- There should be a maximum cost for the mini, to stop people having to buy a ?20 set just to get the left foot from a Supa Stompa. This cost would be:

Up to one 'basic' infantry plastic set. This does not need to be of the same race, so if you want to use Imperial Guard infantry for Chaos construction, that is fine, but you cant draw from both Imperial Guard and Chaos Marine infantry. In addition, you can spend up a certain ammount of additional bits to add. This is ?3 per infantry unit, ?5 per tank/armour vehicle, ?10 per Super Heavy unit and ?15 per War Engine. So, to build a Capitol Imperialis you may want to drawn minis from the Imperial Guard infantry plastic set, and you can use up to ?15 in bits as well.

Now, saying all of this is fine, but it is not always possible. So, feel free to break one or all of these. If you have a choice, then consider the restrictions, but I would rather get a single interesting infantry stand built with Ground Zero parts worth ?12 and archive Eldar Exodites than nothing at all!

Anyway, now this has been explained in my usual brief way (  ???  ), I open the list for suggestions. What do you all think of the idea? And what are your suggestions of things to build?

For openers, I suggest:

- Chaos Oblitorators
- An alternative Tarantula
- Chaos Land Transporter
- Khorne Lord of Battles
- Chaos Raptors
- Blood Axe Ork Looted 'Battlewagons'
- Tyranid 'vehicles'

- An alternative Tarantula

Fanatic #7 suggests using the weapon systems from the new Razorback.

It's interesting that FW haven't done an epic version of their 40K scale model.

Hi,

Fantastic idea, especially with the "no new minis" prospect that we are gonna have to put up with from GW.

I'm not too sure of what minis the vault lists are lacking, so I'll have to take a look through them at some point. In the meantime, I'll think of what units any of the current Ork lists need and draw up a few ideas. (Then I can put them to good use too! :D )

I'll fire up the Mekboy toolkit and try to think up some ideas soon.

Cheers,
Freshmetal

This is a good idea! :D

Hopefully my work stresses will die down by the time you start so I can participate.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

This is a great idea, I'll think up some units to include, probably Sisters stuff at the moment :D but any more and I'll add to the list.

Audrey's Obliterators are pretty easy to build. Colossus robots from the old IG sprues, spare marine shoulder pads and your choice of random guns.

I'm gonna be working on Decimators for ToSG in the next couple of months anyway. I'll be pinching then idea from whoever it was used 2 old-skool plastic landraiders for the tracks and sponson guns, and coming up with ideas for the rest.

I'd love a way to build Defilers that doesn't require Man-o-War bits.

All parts should be currently available, so no bits that are impossible to find.

I think this is a sticking point.  There is simply too much stuff OOP at the moment.  As far as Epic lines, there are only SM, IG, Ork and (soon to be) Eldar.  That would take out basic Chaos infantry sprues, for instance.

Thanks for your comments guys. To answer a few questions:

First up is to simply compile a list of what is not available, and also is not likely to become available. So, for instance, anything that was available with 3rd edition should be around later. Anything that is new for EA would be a good target.

Sisters, Necrons, Dark Eldar and so on are all good, as long as the units are drawn from those in the semi-official playtest lists.

Picking the units that everyone will have to focus on will be easy. I will do it.  :D

Every three weeks I will make a post to let everyone know what they should be concentrating on for this period. The idea is that you participate in whatever floats your boat. But, I will not announce what is coming up until the three week period has started. I want to keep this as tight as possible.

The problem of the very limited availability is an issue. I would guess that we should use something like the Chaos plastics... simply because we will have to. I think that we should assume that anything that had a mini in third edition and also appears in EA is fair game. But, this is a difficult issue and I am open to any opinions on this.

Thanks.

Ok, I'd probably have to make very irregular contributions due to to6g and loads of deadlines - as well as availability of stuff - but I'll try the odd 'challenge'. So I'm more or less in - if you can stand the odd weird model.  :D

Yup; availability of parts will be my major headache too as I'll probably be mail-ordering most bitz (and that ain't too cheap either :;): )
Would very simple Green Stuff sculpting also count? I'm thinking stuff like a simple 3 step "how to" for decorating say your Lord Of Battles with tiny skulls. I know that it  would have to be very simple since not everybody are comfortable using the stuff.

Cheers! :)

OK. That is something that I like about this idea, it would focus on the unit to be built. If you are a Chaos player, then you only need to make these, etc. If there is a unit that goes three weeks and no-one makes anything, we just move on. No-one is under pressure to do anything unless they feel inspired. And, anyone can take part if they build something (and you would have to show pictures of a completed mini, not just ideas or sketches).

Sculpting would be fine. I am fairly typical in that I would like to be able to do that, so an introduction would be great. If small bits need sculpting then that is fine. Personally, I would prefer it if any sculpted parts are not central to the mini, so they could be left off or changed if I couldnt be bothered.

Can someone point me towards Audreys Oblitorators? I thought about using Ork Warlords as a base...

So, what do we have so far?

- Chaos Oblitorators
- An alternative Tarantula
- Chaos Land Transporter
- Khorne Lord of Battles
- Chaos Raptors
- Blood Axe Ork Looted 'Battlewagons'
- Tyranid 'vehicles' (specifics?)
- Tzeentchian Silver Tower
- Warp Palace
- Sisters stuff (specifics?)
- Defiler
- Doom Wheel
- Necrons (specifics?)
- Dark Eldar (no army list)

Any further thoughts? Would everyone be ready to kick this off on Monday 21st Feb?

Monday would be ok, but as I said I'll only do the occasional one. And I'd add a single item - Chaos cultists, for the L&D list, please.
