Post subject:  Magnetising weapons

I'm going to magnetise the weapons and head on a warlock titan but, not ever having done this type of thing before, am wondering how big the magnets need to be. If I bought tiny 2mm x 1mm discs, would these be strong enough? The weapons only weigh 12g or less, but as a rule I take quoted performance ratings with a large pinch of salt so have no real idea how strong these tiny things are.

The reason I'm looking at this size is because I'm lazy. The pins built into the weapons are 2mm wide by 2.5mm high so in theory I could just cut the pins on the weapons down, stick one magnet in each hole, and one on each weapon and they'd fit perfectly together hidden in the predrilled arm hole. No drilling required.

I used 1/32" x 5/32" diameter magnets on my Minervans they're strong enough to pick up the chassis of the tank fairly easily (it's an EW Guild chassis) but not strong enough to pick up a superheavy chassis (the Guild UPV MkII chassis). If the figures on Amazing Magnets are to be believed, a 1/32" X 1/16" diameter, the closest I could find, has about 20% less pull than that. I think you'll be OK. If not you can add two stacked magnets to one side to increase the strength a bit.

OK thanks for the quick reply. I didn't realise stacking would work. Having found some on eBay for £2.90 per 50 shipped it's hardly a big expense to find out anyway. I don't actually have a phantom head or pulsars yet so if I have to buy more and wait for them that's not a big deal either.

Err, anyone got any phantom heads or pulsars lying about collecting dust? :)

I think stacking will work. It certainly seems that a magnet sticks to a stack with more force than to a single magnet. Logic says if you stick two magnets end to end with opposing poles touching the magnetic field should approximate that of a single magnet with twice the thickness, which would have a higher pull. It certainly won't have a linear effect though; if a magnet has a pull of x, two stacked magnets won't have pull 2x.

Stacking magnets does work. It increases the measured surface gauss according to the ratios of diameter and thickness, so this works best with magnets of same size. With exactly the same size magnets, the increase is indeed 2x.

I've tried magnetising a Warlock's head, wings and weapons (well shoulders+weapons) with those dinky magnets to facilitate transporting it and it wasn't a huge success. I bought some of the next size up (3x2mm I think) which I'll be trying next, fingers crossed those will work!

OK so 2mm x 1mm won't work. OKish for the head and the power fist (they stay on at least) but not for the psychic lance, which droops down due to the fulcrum point being at the back.

I am going to try 4mm x 1.5mm next...

Keep us informed :D.

Where did the magnets come from that people have been using on there EW models? I'm getting tempted for my Guild army!

I got mine from amazingmagnets.com. 5/32" diameter, 1/32" thickness. They fit the turret holes with no drilling, so you just need to work on the turrets.

Found 'em. Any kind of preferred steel disc to marry them up too?

Anyone know of a UK distributor?

I just used another magnet, so not sure.
