OK, for my IG, I'm planning on using a "field green" for the coats- an equal mix of Chaos Black, Codex Grey and Dark Angels green. The planned base colour was going to be Scorched Brown, with a SB/Bestial Brown drybrush, but as NetEpic pointed out, the camo and the bases don't go together very well. Any thoughts on a more appropriate basing scheme? I'll be posting pics of the inf once I've got a stand at the point where painting the base becomes a problem :)

Second question, directed at Tuffskull in particular - in the speed painted IG army, were the tanks glued on the Warmaster bases prior to sanding and painting the bases, or were they added afterwards? I couldn;t make it out from the thread (I was bored at Uni, and read the whole thread :))

Thanks

Hi Dystartes,
my standard basing system (i.e. the won which is easiest to make and which I always seem to revert to) might fit - choose a grey slightly darker than the codex grey you are using for the uniforms for the bases. Glue some sand or pepper (yes, I'm serious - you get to sneeze a lot, but the effect is good) or cat litter (Fuller's earth type, unused) on the bases, undercoat, paint, and drybrush - very light grey or white, in minimal amounts. As an alternative, the pepper (black, by the way) can be glue after painting, to produce a volcanic-like (and pepper-smelling) ash. Then glue a few patches of fine green flock on, and you get rubble, ruins, or grey/black ash with patches of vegetation. A few scraps off the ruins from the Epic base sprues look good too. The colours should fit well with the camo - but try not to make the troops too invisible. :O

vanvlak> THe Codex Grey is mixed into the Chaos Black and Dark Angels Green to give the colour for the uniforms. It isn't used on its own, as plain vanilla grey troops would be too boring :)

Oh - doh! :p ?I thought it was an equal mix of surface areas! Right then, the camo should work by hiding the troops, but you don't want too much of that for the models as they cannot be indistinguishable from the base colours. Hmm. Very dark grey or charcoal black base with strong, light colour ?highlighting to bring out texture on the base, depicting an ash waste, or a dark-sky planet, perhaps? Or, if you can get your hands on dark green flock or dark green shrubbery (to scale of course!) try a snowy base (see Stormseer's IG thread elsewhere) with some patches of vegetation.

EDIT - oh! - you're THE Dysartes - of Dysartes.com fame - wow - welcome!  :D

Now, y'see, this is a reaction I'm always puzzled to get - to me I'm just a guy, y'know? :)

Thanks for the welcome, though - I like the idea of the black base with a strong light highlight - Graveyeard Earth, mebbe?

Hi Dysartes, welcome to the boards... :)

Camo is an interesting problem when painting Epic minis, and getting the balance right between your models looking realistic, and having them be invisible can be difficult!

Here is my IG thread; http://www.epic40k.co.uk/epicomm....72;st=0

Infantry appear towards the end (and I still need to get some good pics of them) - I chose to paint them in colours that would stand out from the snowy bases, rather than a plain white camo scheme... :)

Right  - just THE Dysartes guy!
Re graveyard earth - never used it, and can't remember the shade! But any colour - or sequence of colours - could work - for Tzeentchian troops in 40K I've even tried blue and pink (Horror colours, of course). Nurgly stuff could have sickly green drybrush, khorne a blooded red, Slaanesh is purple to me; the IG and SM and AdMech can have any shade of light grey, brown, or even Spacewolf grey (which to my eyes is bluish) or white.
Cheers.
