Post subject:  How to paint using White?

I'm trying to paint white onto a black surface... not sure if the paint is just too thick, but I've always had this problem.

When you paint white on black, the first coat always leaves patches of black showing through.

Applying a second coat sometimes help, but even as hard as I try, the white never seems to have a smooth white surface. Any tips / ideas?

Yup, you have to use several coats - it's the only way.  I sometimes start off with a base coat of space wolves grey or similar to ease the process along.  For epic scale figures the problem is not so bad, and you can often get away with one coat in many situations... not on big areas tho.

I agree with Markconz. Use a "medium" colour in between. Try Shadow Grey followed by Space Wolves Grey followed by white. Remember to keep the paints thin and it also gives you good opportunity for a nice shading.:;):  Just be carefull to leave the shading subtle: Otherwise your mini will look grey all of a sudden!

Cheers! :)

Thanks for the suggestions, although that's a lot of coats of paint.

I'm painting my Slaanesh Titan, so it's rather a large surface. So Grey, Space Wolf Grey, White, Pink  :D

I think I just need a new pot of pink, this one that I've had since... 10 years ago seems very watery.

I either use blue or grey as a middle colour.

One thing I do when painting white, is to undercoat white and then blacken everything that needs to be black.

A good (non-Epic) example was my Grot Bomb Launcha

If you're heading for a final colour of pink over the white, then you could just skip the white. Pink willnormally apply well over Space Wolf grey, which in turn applies better than white over black as previously stated.

The other way to go is use purple or red undercoats from the black which wil pply easier & work up to the pink as a layered "highlight".
