Post subject:  Chaos Army Colours
Hi guys,

I'm finally finishing off the immediate bits for my IG and SM forces and am turning my focus to my unpainted Chaos hordes.

I want a rounded and general Chaos force to which I can add specialist components such as Plague marines, Bezerkers etc later?Thus an undivided Legion suits me best.

Which one though? ?I want one that looks good enmass. ?I'm thinking of either Alpha, Legion, Black Legion or Word Bearers at the moment. ?I was wondering who had painted these up and how they looked on the table. ?The main point is that the Chaos Marines have to look very different to my Dark Angels.

Hmmm... Personally I'd go for the Black Legion since the black is a fairly neutral colour which goes well with anything. It should be relatively easy to paint as well: Black spray undercoat, grey or bluish highlights and gold trimming. Finally paint weapons chainmail.
Alpha Legion or World bearers would also be cool since not that many people are doing these armies. However the overall feel of the army might be a bit more messy when you start to add Chaos specific formations to the army. ...Then again I'm painitng up my Chaos according to NetEpic rules so I have 4 large factions devoted to  each Chaos Power and a myriad of colours. Do as you please but I think Black Legion would be easiest and prooduce a very nice result.

Hehe, my Chaos stuff is completely unpainted as well, and I've been wondering about this issue... Black Legion sounds good, especially because it will contrast with my other armies:

Dark Green for Dark Angels (mostly)
Dull Red for Orks
Green and White for Biel Tan Eldar
Dull Yellow for Nids
Codex Grey for Guard.

Hey!!  I haven't got a blue army :(  
What can I paint that is blue?! Mind you, I kinda agree with L4 here and painted my 'shooting' armies in sensible greens and greys...

Hi,

@Tas: As WMN has said, it depends on how you think you'll develop the army. If you fancy getting a bit of everything, go Black legion. If you have a plan to go in one direction, maybe consider World Bearers, etc to compliment the Chaos god's colour that you chose.

@ Markconz: how about Tau in night blue/ ice blue, or Necrons in metallic blue? That would look nice.

The only chaos stuff I've got is SM2 era and not exactly relevant compared to E40k stuff, with the infantry made up of such a mix of minis. I think I'll wait to see what they plan only releasing first. That is if I build Chaos at all! I'm not a huge fan of them. :p

Tas, look up the fluff: Alpha legion generally work within imperial territories without support from other legions, and don't normally have chaos marks and daemons - so if you want to add that sort of stuff (and who wouldn't?) go for Black L or Word Bs. I personally would select the Word Bearers - with their shrine-building fanatism you can have fun setting up loads of Chaos scenery bits - and perhaps create a mobile altar of Chaos etc. Better stop - I don't want to add the latter to my pile of conversion projects.

Hi!

My personal favorite is World Eater of khorne. The combination of bronze, brass, black and some blood red has avery good gothic en masee look to it. Very impressive.

Alpha Legion. Forget the wusses who fled to the Eye of Error and do the real men who stayed in the Imperium. (  :laugh:  )

Seriously, Alpha legion is probably trickier to paint but You would get a rather unique army as I don't know of anybody who collects it.  Plus you could use spare IG as the cultist shock troops.

Thanks for all the suggestions lads. ?I'm going to do a few test bases for each army and then decide. ?Its kinda hard deciding which army before the rules proper for them are released, but I like the fluff for all 3 (Black, Alha and Word) - I'd prefer something original though so Word Bearers and Alpha legion are top contenders at the moments.

Has anyone got any large scale chaos troops pics for these legions?  If nobody has done them thats that may be enough reason alone to do them!
