Hello All, This is the beginning of my Army Journal. ?I hope these are still popular. ? The army is an Epic Dark Angels force. ?The army is not overly large weighing in at aprox. 5,000 points, without Navy or Titan support. ?A light weight in comparison to others right Primach. ? ![]() This force is built around the core of a Space Marine Battle company. ?So at it?s heart the army has two Tactical detachments (6 squads), 1 Devastator Detachment (2 squads), 1 Assault detachment (2 squads). ?Like any combat unit it has been reinforce with other detachments from the Chapter?s other companies. ?The army has a Terminator detachment, a scout detachment, good armor reinforcements, a strong recon element, some dreadnoughts, and gunship support. Here is a summary of the army here. Tactical Detachment in Rhinos Tactical Detachment in Rhinos Devastator Detachment No Rhinos Dreadnought x4 Scout Detachment No Rhinos Assault Detachment Terminator Detachment Land Raider Detachment Predator Detachment Whirlwind Detachment Hunter Detachment (1 Hunter assigned to each Tactical, Devastator, and Whirlwind formation) Bike Detachment Bike Detachment (all upgraded to Attack bikes) Land Speeder Detachment (Maybe two - old style) Thunderhawk Gunship x3 I would like to ask one question to the more experienced players. ?The question concerns the placement the space marine characters. ?This force is intended to have only 4 characters; one supreme commander, commander, chaplain, and librarian. ?So where is the best place for these characters. ?Any input would be appreciated. ? ? It is my intention to write daily on the previous night?s activities and to post pictures up on the weekends. ?I have given myself one month to complete this project and I hope this log will encourage me to keep going. ?I hope you will enjoy this. Thanks 08/03/08 ? Day 1 ? Assembly I broke open all the cool new blisters I got from GW about a month ago. ?I spread out 6 Rhinos, 8 Whirlwind/Hunters, 4 Predators, and 4 Land Raiders and began the process of cleaning the flash and giving them a scrub down with soap and water. ?I was taken back by their new size and weight, I felt the power and it was good? ![]() This took a little longer than I expected. ?The Rhinos had a good deal of flash on the tracks and on the engine exhausts located on either side of the vehicle. ?The Whirlwind/Hunters and Predator hulls had a huge piece in the front. ? I saw what people have been talking concerning the casting quality of the Rhino chassis. ?Overall my impression was good, especially from the wargamer point of view, i.e. about three feet above the table. ?But some of the Rhinos chassis did not have clear castings on their sides thus losing some of the detail. ?Ironically, there were no imperfections on the top of the vehicles, further reinforcing the wargamer?s view. ?Overall they are very impressive models that need a little cleaning up. ? The Predators had very clean side sponsons and turrets. ?They fit well and were easy to assemble. ?The hunter and whirlwind turrets were also easy to clean and glue on. ? The Land Raiders were almost flawless, with very little flash and all the weaponry very cleanly cast. ?The best part was their size. ?They are impressive. I really must compare them to the FW IG super heavies. ? Well once was all the models were cleaned, washed, and glued it was 1:00 AM and time for bed. ?They where stored away ready for primer. What?s to Come? Tonight I hope to get all the infantry, bikes, and Land Speeders glued onto little Popsicle sticks. ?How hard can that be? ?Once that is done I?ll hit the vehicles with primer and let them dry overnight. ?There is one Thunderhawk left to assemble so if I have time I?ll get to him. ? My Rhinos casted out the same way. I called G/W US about it, and they said they were aware of the problem and it had to do with the mold ... oh well ... ![]() ![]() |

08/04/04 ? Day 2 ? Form Ranks! Last night I got all the infantry, bikes, Dreadnoughts, and Land Speeders glued onto Popsicle sticks ready for painting. ?I had quite a few heavy weapons and standard marines left so I?ll keep some as reserve and maybe use others for trade or gifts. ? With the Missile launcher Marines I did what was done for the Salamander minis on the Dropship website. ? I cut the ammo clip down, cut the rear tip off and cut a little of the front. ?All of these cuts were quick snips with the clipper. ?I didn?t drill out the front. ?I?m not sure if I?m that ambitious or if I have a small enough drill. ? I pulled enough characters to create one supreme commander stand with supreme commander, standard banner, Apothecary, Techmarine, and Librarian. ?I also pulled one commander, Chaplain, and Librarian. ?My plan for these guys is to mount them on tiny washers as individuals. ?This way I can assign a character to any formation I need. ? While pulling everything out I discovered I had four dreadnoughts not 2. ?I also have eight land speeders not five. ?These are the old style Epic 40K minis; 4 are multi-melta/flamers and 4 are Typhoons. ?So I guess I going to visiting the trade section and see if anyone has one of these minis. ? The Dreads, Attack bikes, and land Speeders had minimal flash and where quick to get ready. ?Things went fast once I had all the boys lined up in formation. What?s to Come? Well after two late nights and more than likely a long day at work today I?m planning to keep it simple. ?How about just find and build that last Thunderhawk. ?The log did work last night. ?The peer pressure I felt made me drag out all the spures and start clipping. ?Once I start I?m find, but starting is so hard some times. ? ![]() Take Care |

08/10/04 ? Day 5 ? Slow start Well it was a busier weekend than I thought. ?On the good side I got two games of 40K in. ?We got the newly finished trench line good and bloody. ?On the bad side the baby got sick. ?L But I did find some time to get started on the painting. ?I did take some pictures just haven?t had a chance to post them. Well my first obstacle to overcome was the primer issue. ?I had a real problem trying to paint these without rubbing of the primer. ?I hit the primed models with a mat finish. ?A trick I learned that helps and has little to no effect on the paint. ?In fact I think it improves it. ?This helped but some of the sharp corners still had problems. ?So I took the time to mount the models on pieces of balsa wood. ?This was the best course and I recommend it to anyone. ?It makes it so much easier to paint and handle the model. I tempted to mount all the finshed models on bases as seen at teh Dropship. This was not my original intend but it really does protect the models. Any thoughts? So with this set up problem solved I set to painting. ?The first unit to be painted was the Hunter section of four Hunters. ? ?At first I was hoping for a quick 3-layer drybrush. ?But the minis proved too small for drybrush. ?It really wasn?t coating the mini well. ?On the third model I switched to a real watered down Dark Angles green base coat. ?I liked the results and touched up the other two. ?I then hit the mini with very watered down black ink all over the model. ?Once this coat was dry I did a light drybrush of Ral Partha Forest green on the whole model. ?I?m not sure that color showed through; 0this step may be abandoned. ?I then did a very light dry brush of snot green at the edges only. ?I was happy with the result. ?I hope it shows up on the pictures. ?At that point I was done for the night. ?It always a little slower at the beginning until you get a feel for the colors and techniques you want to use. ? What to Come: Well I got to do the details tonight and then post the pics of the first finished minis. -Take Care |

8/11/09 - Day 6 - Now we'll talking...Pictures Ok after a frantic night of painting the first Armored Platoon is done. ?The Hunters. ?So lets see, after the base green coat was done this is what I did to each model. 1. ?Hit the tracks and the engine exhaust with boltgun metal 2. Washed the boltgun metal down with black ink (watered down) 3. ?Painted headlights on with yellow 3. ?Painted the targetting sensor with blood red and enchanted blue. 4. ?Added one touch of white on the blue sensor 5. ?Painted the AA missiles in tin blitz. 6. Painted Imperial Eagle in Bronze metallis (Ral Partha/Iron Wind) 7. ?Added Dark Angels emblem at front and side 8. ?Added vehcile numbers 9. ?Touch up some panel lines with straight blank ink. ?Such as the lines between missiles in the Ammo bin and added some black strips down the rail launcher for a little of a burned effect. 10. ?Remove from bases 11. ?Touched up tracks once they where removed from glue. 12. ?Hit with Matt finish Sounds easy huh ? ![]() And with this twelve step recovery program you too can... ![]() In the middle of all this I had a slight set back. ?Vehicle 1 fell to the earth after a bad airdrop training mission and shattered and chipped on the floor. ? ![]() This little incident brought back the green paints for a while. Still don't know if I want to add a base for them yet. So here are the pics. ?There not Dropship quality but I am very happy with them. ?Sorry I was late. Pictures Round 1 Whats to come: I think the Rhinos will be next. Take Care |
