Hi Guys, I need some advice in painting tracks on my Forge World Chimiera. I sprayed white, then sprayed shadow gray. I added camo stripes with bleached bone. I then painted the tracks black and dry brushed with chainmail. It doesn't look quite right somehow. Any ideas? Photos here Sorry for the poor pics, crappy camera! |

Maybe it is because they look too silver and new? Not sure from the photos, just a thought. Maybe what they need is some "brown" like Graveyard Earth to give then the road dirty look? Another idea is to do a dark grey on the tracks then do a dry brush of Graveyard Earth and then a very light dry brush of Boltgun Metal. That way the tracks do not look too clean and new (black at this scale is very stark) and the metal that does show is darker and looks more like metal peeping through the road dust/dirt/grime. Just a couple of ideas. dafrca |

Use a waterdowned black or brown wash and just give them a coating. I recommend using boltgun metal for the tracks next time. It's a more turned down color. Nice tanks by the way tanks for sharing |

Nice tanks Furgie! I agree with CC. I usually go for a Snakebite Leather/Chaos Black mix thinned down and washed over the tracks. Makes them look nicely weathered IMO. Cheers! |

Yep, a black wash does wonders for detail ... |

furgie is this an issue of detail? In the photos I can see detail, so I was not thinking in that direction. dafrca |

Not a detail issue. I just wanted to make the colour look as "real" as possible (stupid really - sci-fi tanks looking real!) - but you get my drift. I'm not the best painter in the world, and not too concerned about detail, these are for playing with not for any competition. I've just bought some brown and boltgun metal, so I'll give the dirty look a try on the Leman Russ I swapped with Cybershadow and post some more pics here. Thanks for all the feedback guys. Furgie BTW - how do I embed a pic into a message rather than using a link? |

Nice stuff Furgie- yep, boltgun metal and a black wash is all they need to get that used look. ...You use the "Image" tags to embed a pic in the text of a message, but I'm pretty sure Yahoo! Photos won't let you do this, so I'd just attach pics to your messages, which you can do just through doing a normal reply (not quick reply). |

As I am sure L4 will be along to tell you, not a stupid idea at all. There is no reason not to paint the Epic stuff with realistic colors, camo, and even, yes, used road wear look. dafrca |

I paint black, then drybrush boltgun metal, then wash with black and sometimes brown ink. |

Sorry L4, didn't mean to offend. I was more thinking along the lines that in the future, who knows what camo colours would be needed on some distant planet. Maybe pink and purple to match the local fauna? Furgie I wanted to try to embed a pic, so here is my command Chimera. |

Nice cam scheme- simple and effective. Very 1980s WARSAW PACT. I do mine very similarly then do what can only be described as a "scubbing" which is a kinda half drybrish with a large brush, deliberately getting the sideskirts and back of the behicle for that 'dust/ and mud kicked up everywhere look'. Not much extra time, but very effective. And remember that you will mostly be looking at them from distances of a metre or more anyway... |
