Hi all,

I'm not the best painter - i tend to rely on drybrushing and basic inking to get the job done to a tabletop level.
Having just gotten into EA (after playing SM/TL era), I am stripping all the paint from the old models, and the 2nd hand ones i've bought off eBay.

I'm thinking of a colour scheme based off the Jouran Dragoons (ref Storm of Iron, BL novel), where its a blue similar to Ultramarine Blue.

Has anyone got experience in using 'Army Painter Quickshade' on Epic scale models? Is the shade too thick, too dark for such a small scale?

I think that the lighter shade of army painter could work well for you here: take a look at my painting blog (below): towards the end I work on a chaos marine army using the medium shade. All i done with that was base colour red, drybrush red highlights, base colour details, wash.

Worked a treat!

I've also used it to great effect on some tyranid mini's (epic) that I used wood dye on before but had gone 'white' due to varnish

I haven't tried in on Infantry but hears some tanks I used it on.... http://www.tacticalwargames.net/taccmd/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=18286

It's not what I really wanted after the fact, too brown for my liking, I plan on using the rest of the can on my US 101st Airborne FoW guys. I have used to great effect and it now a must buy, is the Army painter Color Primers. My Imperial Tanks are using the Sliver Can well and I have a Angel Green for the before mention 101st.

Hmm, yes i was worried about the browning effect - however i figured that due to me wanting to use the Army Painter Ultramarine bluse as a basecoat, the browning effect wouldn't be too noticeable.

I have the shade that's in the middle, not dark or light. I may test in on one tank, just to see if it comes out too dark...

I swear by Games Workshop washes regardless ...

OK, i tried it.
It worked ok, and i have before and after pics.

I think the wash worked well, but I tend to dab the excess away so the wash is never as extreme as it could be - i'll prob paint another model and this time leave it.

Will post pics this evening.

Ok, here's the end result.
I'm no pro painter, and as these shots show, not a pro photographer either!

After the Army Painter Navy Blue primer

Image

Then drybrushing Fortress Grey, a light brown, then Quick Shade, then spray with Dullcoat.

Image

I'm not satisifed with the result.

The drybrushing was either too heavy, or the colour used (Fortress Grey) too light - the tank looks like a scratched model, rather than a 'wear n tear' Chimera. The light brown (Vermin Fur i think..) didnt darken enough with the Quick Shade.
The Quick Shade didnt darken the blue as much as i though it would. I dabbed away the excess where it pooled - i'm wondering if this made a difference, or if the blue is too bright for the Quick Shade to darken significantly.
Its hard to see, but the Quick Shade did darken the recesses/creases of the model ok - just didnt give it the 'dirty dark blue' look i was after.

Ideas to improve guys?

Tee

There's three variates of the quickshade, isn't there? Which one did you use? Dark, Strong or Light? You could also try just dipping the whole thing and shaking the excess off rather than painting it on.

As for the drybrush, maybe enchanted blue or shadow grey instead?

I have the 'middle' strength one.

Yeah, i'll lightly dry brush this time, and with a blue shade, rather than a grey shade!

Cheers,

I would think you'd get some decent variation with the middle tone, maybe not enough was left on? Just guessing, I've never used it. Only been knocked out by the stuff when our local store owner used it on his FoW army...

I'm currently painting up an Emperor's Children army (using a grey basecoat with pink/gold highlights - my source of inspiration
was the 'Don't drop the soap' thread). What has worked really well for me is a grey base (car primer - nothing too expensive !!)
and then Badab Black daubed over. This gives you a superb looking model which just needs a few areas picking out (incl the
tracks) to finish it. The Badab Black leaves a really beautiful finish, nice and matt and shaded from dark to light round each
piece of relief on the model. Worth a try.

I'll try to get a photo sorted.

I'd also suggest less liberal weathering. Just around the underside of the vehicle and tracks. The very even nature of the drybrush detracts from the realism of adding weathering. The highlight (I'd suggest Shadow Grey or equivelant) will make the detail on top stand out enough.

I used the Future magic wash on my 6mm Kratonians then dry-brushed to highlight. I was happy with the results:

I've used four bottles of GW washes on my new army; works Perfect. I whipped up 426 painted Space Elves and 60 warmachines for them in a weekend using that - assembling and basing took longer than painting =P

On my light blue Craftworld Parintachin eldar I use a 40/60 mix of blue and black wash. I like it better than dip for two reasons: It's easier to control, and it doesn't do your brains in just breathing where the miniatures dry.
