So was thinking about this. Are there any good proxies for lesser demons?

Yes, or look up people's HOTT armies. Most go for 15mm for HOTT but there's a sizeable number of 6mm players too.

do you dislike the GW models in the chaos warhost set? seems to be plenty of lesser daemons in there.....
