Not sure if my painting is up to the standards I'd like before I start spamming the web with pictures... But I want to show my minis to somebody and I figure it's good motivation for further painting!

Right now I'm painting up a Necron force.

My first attempts at Obelisks are here

After getting my Monolight proxies I figured that a 20mm base is too small, so my Obelisk X2 is made from a 25mm base with a layer of plasticard on top and a bit of metal wire:


The X2 is on the left, I cut the plasticard bit too small so I'll replace it at some point. The one on the right I'm more satisfied with, I figure it's decent enough for now.

Those look great, although the picture are a bit small.

I'm struggling a bit with the camera, there's some function in there that refuses to take a picture if the object in the focus is closer than this. Should probably read the manual...

Tried making cutouts of the original picture (digital cameras make huuuge pics...) but they're a bit blurry

What camera is it? I assume you have Macro on (the flower symbol), and you're not trying to zoom in at the same time?

I'm using a Nikon d40x I'm borrowing. The lens is huge (to me at least!), something like 8-10cm long when retracted, I'm thinking that might be part of the problem? Tried the flower setting, I got this:



Now I'm not sure if it's a shitty picture or a poor paint job I think the colors Close up photography can be so unforgiving... The real colors are somewhere in between this photo and the first photos (which were taken without flash).

It can actually be useful to take pictures whilst painting to view on screen, things looks a bit different and you might notice details that you previously missed Id say your greens look good, but a bit of highlighting on the hard black edges wouldn't go amiss.

There is actually some dark grey highlights, but only on the corner edges and the "top" of the lines on the side. You can see it on the last pic (it looks shiny), but I should add highlights to the vertical lines too. I'm afraid that if I add more hightlights than that the result will be too grey...I like them black.

You could try a adding a blue note into the highlights if you want to avoid over-greyification.

Won't that just turn the thing dark blue though? I like the black-with-some-grey scheme, I just don't want it to be too light.

Very sharp thin blue highlights would certainly help.

Thanks for the helpfull tips all. I'm still not convinced that blue highlights are what I'll want, but I'll try it out on one monolith and complete the grey highlights on the other one.

And see if I can't get a decent picture of them both.

Ah, it's a dSLR. You may be better off with a compact camera... they're often better at macro photos right out of the box (after all, SLRs have macro-specific lenses you can buy).

We have a Nikon d70 and the white balance can be frustrating... leaving it on Auto is a recipe for disaster. You'll have to fool around with it. I can't help with the d40 but some people have good luck fine tuning Auto mode (setting it to -3 or +3), and you should try incandescent and fluorescent modes too.

Very limited extreme highlights (almost white) won't turn the whole thing gray. Lots of gray highlights would do that.

I'm with zombo, I prefer highlighting in blue rather than grey on black in most cases. If you have it try a fine highlight with shadow grey
