Hi guys,

After realising that I am now building my 5th IG Company Command Stand that is really the same as all the others except for figure composition, I was wondering what if any conversions you guys have done to make things interesting?  I am thinking of simple but effective swaps and was wondering what experiences you had had.

For example:
Power Fist from a SM Sgt onto a Commissar/Colonel
Swapping a chainsword for a powersword on Colonel/Commissar/SM

I am NOT the best (or even a really adequate :) ) converter so I am thinking of easy to acheive but colourful things to inspire me...

Any thoughts?

I've done a lot of conversions and your best bet is to keep it simple.  look over the figure you are going to convert, then look for figures that share the same pose.  These are you best conversion target.  Figures that are posed similarly will often share attachment points for weapons, ect...  The fewer cuts you have to make the better.
Here are a couple of conversion I just finished for my Night lords command stand.

This is an Intelligence officer

This is an assualt term who serves commander of the bodyguard.
I decided to give all the minis on the command stand an "assault" feel and a bit of Slaanesh taint.

Wow! They look great!

I haven't gotten that far yet as to convert 6mm infantry. I have only converted or messed around with the bigger things like titans and super heavies.

Great work!

Wow they do like great! ?

Like DarkOne, I haven't messed around with converting 6mm infantry before and until now, I would have blanched at the idea! ?

I just got home and after thinking about it driving home, immediately made a powerfisted Commissar. Funnily enough I made these exactly as you had mentioned, Seekermeng - very similar poses, only 1 cut required on each figure. It looks great (IMHO) and very natural. Plus now my opponet will be scared of assaulting the commissar sporting a chainsword AND a powerfist! :D ?

Pics as soon as I can get him painted and a decent closeup shot.

Anyone else had good infantry conversion successes?

Most of my conversions for 6mm have been command stands.
No pics yet. Sorry.

- Ork Boar Boyz: ?Cut at waist, added nob and banner bearer. This one is done and I intend to enter it in the competition.

- Stormboyz Commander (by far my most fiddly infantry conversion): Nob body, stormboy jetpack, right arm with gun from kommando, left shoulder pad from a second nob, left arm from Kommando, powerfist from the right arm, holding a banner pole. I hope to have this one painted for the competition.

- Slaanesh Steed: Cut at waist, added tech marine torso and commander torso (with putty to complete cloak).

- Tzeentch sorcerers: Old Chaos champion on disc from disc rider, new SM librarian on disc.

- Tzeentch disc riders: Discs from putty in the style of the screamers, set the trooper's base into the putty.

=========

I've found a nice technique for pinning small plastic pieces. I take a twist tie (like from a bread sack), strip it and straighten it. Holding it with needle nose pliers, heat it with a cigarette lighter. While hot, insert it into the fig.

Next, you are going to heat the part sticking out. Obviously, heat conducts. You need to trim the wire as close as possible while not risking melting the fig.

Heat the exposed wire and insert into the other part.

Use a tiny bit of putty or a gel-type modeling cement to finish out any rough parts, but usually paint will cover any problems.

I've never had one break, while items that were glue-only tend to come apart on me.

Hope that feeds the imagination.

Hi!

Nice figs!

I think command units are always a good area to make conversions in since they usually are a minor component of your armies and they make them stand out at a distance.

The only epic conversions I've ever made were the command stands of my Rough Rider company. I cut a rider from the waist and scraped off the hunting lance. Then I cut off a regular officer's upper body and head. I glued the head back on so that it faces forward. Next I cut the hand holding chainsword and positioned it so that the sword points forward. Then I glued it on the rider's lower body. An (nearly) instant cavalry officer.

I think I will bend slightly the arm holding the standard pole someday; it looks pretty stupid when it sticks straight to the side.

I do convert many figures. I agree with the advice that fewer cuts (preferably one) are better for strength issues.

However, sometimes good command stands don't need "figure" converting at all.

Here are some other ideas to make your command stands stand out without "figure" converting:

- Base them on pennies or other distinctive bases.

- Give them a different paint job to distinguish them.

- Pair the commander up with some unique bodyguards, retainers (Ogryns anyone?), slain comrades, or even HQ crew.

- Base them using a standard base, but build up a little mound under the "COMMANDER" so that he (or she as it may be) will sytand out.

- Use a non-GW proxy figure!

- Add a "personality" detail such as a spare motorcycle or other personal "touch."

- Add a little unique terrain or a small structure.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

My first conversions were of my Seer Council, which I mentioned a little while back (still not painted tho  )
..They were pretty simple, if a little fiddly. Later I plan on converting a Banshee exarch in a similar manner to Tuffskull's excellent model, and maybe trying it out with some different aspects too...

I have to admit that converting 6mm figs is compulsive for me. I love seeing bases where all the figures are different. To see examples of my stuff check out

I'm (and I'm sure Maksim) is (are) looking forward to your PDF!

I can't seem to get to the Assault SM Co. from your site?

Or the SM Land Raider Co., I think? ?

Am I doing something wrong?
