Post subject:  Quick and dirty Obelisks

Looking around the web for Necron Obelisk pictures, google gave me this:

http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2008/01/ ... heets.html

I think the sleek, flat look is pretty cool, and then thought "hey, that looks like a square warhammer base". So I tried my skill (not very good) at carving a base up to make a quick obelisk. The bols obelisk has a flat crystal, which I tried copying by painting it on. I also got some crystals from a craft shop, attached pictures of both (and a comparison picture).

Now, first of all, is this workable at all, or will it never be anything but a shitty slottabase that I try to pass off as a mini? If it can be used, I'm not sure if a flat, painted-on "crystal" is the best way to go for 6mm, or if I should stick the crystal on top of it. I'm also wondering if it might not be a bit on the small size and that a 25mm base might not work better.

Finally, try to no pay too much attention to the paint job, if it can even be called that - I'm no great painter in the best of times, and this was a rush job :P

It's a pretty standars way of doing it. My friend does the same, and it's been suggested in at least one tutorial, perhaps even the one in Raiders. I wasn't even aware that anyone had ported the Obelisk over to 40k. Interesting.

The Raiders obelisk is a bit more involved, with actual tubing as well as built-up corners, and a layer of plasticard on top of an inverted base.

Replicating the cool carved designs on the 28mm version is a bit beyond my skills sadly, so it's pretty featureless.

What about steps rather than slopes for the four carved out bits?

it looks ideal for push moulding - so invest a little time in the first model, make a mold and profit!

Cut small steps into the ramp you have added on each edge, so it is steps not a gentle slope. Would match the monolith and some of the fan made obelisk proxies. Just a thought :)

Good news then – you don't need any moulding skills to press mould ;)
