is this too fine detail to print/cast?

Finest detail I like to work in is 0.2mm. Any details below that tend to become unreliable.

So, working on an Ordinatus, are we?

On that subject, I'd love to be able to find a good track unit to build large stuff like Ordinatus and Capitol Imperialis class Super heavies from.

I always envision such things as having multiple separate track units (4 like the giant NASA land crawler, or even possibly 6).

You know, most vehicles with treads have more a complex tread arrangement than the flat-with-circular-ends arrangement that you show. There are various reasons for this.

Changing the tread geometry would go a long way towards making something look less toy-like. Even if the old ordinatus had treads like that.

I could argue that being 2.5 marines high - anything the tracks can't already climb is probably to big for a large unwieldy vehicle to mount.

As it was 8 separate bogies seem to make sense, it's the only way to keep a semblance of mobility.

I understand the 'toy-like' comment and that is something to probably avoid. All my source material shows flat tracks though.
Any good ideas will be ruthlessly stolen.

Well, having wheels as high as the whole track unit, specially at the ends, would nullify part of the flexibility of the track itself, and certainly wouldn't provide as much traction over rough terrain, while making the unit more fragile.
That is one of the reason why almost all tracked military vehicles have trapezoid shaped tracks.
In particular, the powering wheels don't have to be indirect contact with the ground.

I'd like to see a CI done up similar to the concept sketches that were done for E:A before Fanatic got shut down.

There will be an internal courtyard, with appropriate detailing.



With Excommunication Launchers and a little more detailing added.

Model will be 120mm long in Epic. Detail down to 0.3mm
Only viable way to produce will be a plastic extruder type 3d printer.

I'm not sold on the ginormous mortar.

Design it right and you could do a model that size with printapart for a reasonable cost.

does print-a-part charge on outer volume or plastic volume? could i make sections of it hollowed out?

Mostly outer volume. Hollowing helps a little bit, but it's probably not worth the effort.

I know Jonluke saved a decent chunk by hollowing out the legs of his LWR.

By making it from several components, you could probably reduce the cost quite a bit.

Alternatively, you could plastic-extrude the interior "hull" and then use a higher quality service to print "detail panels" which are designed to be glued to the surface of the master model.
