Hi guys,

I recently tripped over this image I've seen a few times before, but this time it set my creative juices all bubbling. I reckon it'd make a perfect abatoire and the scarab swarms would fit perfectly with its tomb spider esque appearance.

So what components do you think I'd require to build it in epic scale? Obviously tomb spider legs and possibly arms, but not the head as it's too big. The rests a little more difficult so any help would be gretly appreciated.

Cheers

Can't remember which company eventually produced the Spider Mech JOhn Bear Ross designed a few months ago. but some parts of that model might make a good base. Then get some necron spiney-bits for the body and I thik you should have something passable.

A 40k tomb spyder is definately a good start, I use one as an abattoir.

Yeah, track these down. They were about land raider sized spider thingies. I might do a bit of a search now and see what I can come up with.

thanks for the link,

They look good, I'm afraid there too small for what I had it mind. An abattoir is DC6 so I was looking to cover a titan base with it.

Good inspiration though!

For the head I was thinking about using an old scarab for the head an maybe the legs for the smaller arms.

What about the abdomen, any thoughts?

Abbatoir DC is being upped to 8 DC for the updated version. :)

Modelling putty sculpted to the right sort of smoothish bulged shape, then use plasticard cut to the right sort of angular shapes? Fiddly but could work. Spine bits from Necron Destroyer parts? (just buy the particular components you need online, no need to buy the whole kit).

GW canceled almost the entirety of their component-ordering service a year or two back.

You can most plastic parts from websites like www.bitzbox.co.uk and so on though, assuming the Destroyers are plastic? I think they are anyhoo.

I know, I was aware of this :)

However small companies stepped up to buy up GW kits, split them out and sell the bits online. It's mostly plastic but also some metal and you can even get some resin FW kits split out this way too.

I've linked to one of the companies myself in my signiture for yonks now since I stumbled across their existence (I've used both them and Bitzbox and Bitzbox actually have a wider range so might be the better option though worth checking both).

If something is not in stock you can signup for a reminder email when they come in. All in works pretty handily for converters as you now get multiples of a single component on a plastic sprue rather than having to buy the whole sprue like you had to from GW.

They're a really handy, and sensible service to use.

I myself ordered some Whirlwind radar dishes to add to some of the old GW epic objectives without their top elements.  Voila! Instant listening stations!

That thing is outstandingly HUGE. :alien:

I actually think you would be far better off using the standard Tomb Spyder head/arms for the front end and scratchbuilding the rest.  The standard Spyder legs are way too small and you would just need to beef them up beyond the point of reason to look right.  That being said, I can see using the end of the legs for the final "tip" portion of the main legs with work.  The Destroyer torso would definitely be on my short list for bits.

The best way to work out the abdomen would be to find a plastic egg of about the right size and then laminate p-card strips around it.  I'd probably start there, then form up the spine along the back of it, work out the adjoining front section, and add the legs/exciting bits last.

Great subject for a project and it should be loads of fun!

hhhmmmmmmmm looks like I may have to shift the scale I was going to do this in.

My original idea was to shrink it down and try to make it so that it doesn't cover too much more than a 60mm base.

Thinking about it though upgrading it to something like 100 - 120 (A CD or just smaller) would be an easier option, the tomb spyder head would no longer be too big, creating the basic shapes in plasticard would be a lot less fiddly, more of the necron range would be ata  useful scale and finding an appropriate sized egg would also be easier. I might even be able to use a monolith crystal (I dont have one and never seen one up close so please let me know if I'm barking up the wrong tree). Plus I could pass it off as "True Scale"!

For the spines I'm thinking of using curtain rail hooks or similar C shaped plastic cut to various heights.

The main area which concerns me now is the thorax, I'm having a little trouble invisioning what shape it would be without the legs, body and spine. The destroyer is probably a good place to start but its not the right shape just yet I feel.

Any ideas Anybody?

P.S Cheers for the bits site links, I've used bitsnkits before but hadn't seen bitzbox
