I went out for a quick drink with some friends last night.

Nothing new so far.

On my return, despite it being 1am, I decided I didnt feel like going to bed & I thought I'd do a little painting to make the most of my last night of freedom (Helen returns from Uni tonight ?}:) ).

Then something weird happened......

I painted a Tyranid....

He's not great, but I didnt finish until about 2:30am so he was being painted through rather bleary eyes - also not helped by the flash on my digicam going a little funky this morning.

So I got up this morning and thought "what use do I have for a Tyranid???". I've never completed a 'Nid army for epic, not even in my "dunk painting" *shudder* days. ?

One thing lead to another, and another thing lead to a load of waffle on this forum topic (you've just read it....).

ANYWAY, to the point:

In January, as you (should) know, I was planning to do an Ork Army. However, we already have Orks & SM Diaries being done by other people on this forum. I could change my plans and try and do a 'Nid army instead.

I already have the models for the Orks, and in honesty they'd probably be of more practical use for demo'ing E:A as they're in the initial release, but I am very tempted to do a Tyranid army as I've never really done one before.

So - what would you lot prefer to see me make a mess of? A few hundred greenskins or a swarm of chitenous armoured super-bugs?

Warning: If you vote super-bugs, be ready for a torrent of posts requesting help with army lists, tactics, concepts, and probably pleas for miniature trades to get the bits I need since I'm a total Bug Newbie!

Hi!

I like novelty, so definitely do the bugs.

I vote for orks, as you say they would be more useful.  The playtest bug list will probably change a lot before the official version is released.

Tuffskull, if you do the Tyranid diary, I'll do the Eldar! I was originally on to orks too, but was swayed by the fun I had with my Firewing (which is now being supplemented by a set of twin brethren) onto Eldar - I'll probably finish one infantry stand to seventy of yours, but... I'll rise to the challenge and fall with Eldar-like grace.

Well, somethings happened to make it slightly more interesting to go the bug route.

I read the first 4 replies andgot an idea of which way people were going on this so I fetched the box labelled "approx. 7k Epic Nids" down from the loft.

Only one problem - It was full of 15mm War machines & Elves.

It appears I've made a mistake &sold off almost all my Nids under the false impression I still had a good horde reserved!

Having now gone through all my accessible stores, I've discovered that I only have enough of the manditory infantry (Gaunts & Gargoyles - we dont have Raveners yet!) to make an 1100 point army!! Arrgh.

My pitiful Nid force available:
5 stands genestealers
5 stands of Gargoyles
13 stands of gaunts
3 Lictors
9 malefactors
6 dactylis
6 Biovore
9 Hive Tyrant
12 carnifex
1 Hierophant
1 Dominatrix
2 FW Harridan

So, May the trading begin! I'm still up for doing 'Nids, but it looks like I've got a challenge just to hunt down enough miniatures before I can start painting!

anyone got any Tyranids going cheap??

It seems you mostly lack infantry... at least i always see an army made of a swarm of infantry when i ear tyranids...

You definitely need lots more Genestealers....  The guy in my group that has the 'nids uses a LOT of 'stealers, and they are deadly.  That is, of course, if he can get them into my lines, and usually if that happens, its game over for me anyways.

Hi!

Yay! Tyranids win.

As for getting them, try the usual sources or e-bay and bartertown, they aren't as popular as some of the other epic armies and you may get a good deal.

Definately Bugs! I thought about my Tyranid Seeding Swarm army, painted up three Gaunts in test colours and then shelved the lot for the Marines (as they would give me a legal force for the release - although at the rate they are going, I wont even have them assembled by then!). Anyway, I dont have much, but any vehicles and larger stuff that I have I can throw your way. I only want the infantry for the Swarm anyhow.

I would love to see a force of these guys. When do you start?  :;):

Tuffskull,

Expect to find a lot of Hive tyrants and Domintrice out there. Almost every Nid trade came with some of those. Markconz appears to have had the same problem since he has WAY more Hive Tyrants than would be feasible to use. Oh well!

I had a skeletal Nid force until the end of 2002 when I started beefing up my Nids.

They're much bigger now.

Use your extra Dominatrice to convert to the new neuter big guy (forgot his or maybe its' name... ).

The Expectorator (a big Biovore) us probably best to use the 25mm Biovore as a basis of conversion. I like the older 25mm 40k Biovore better than the newer version.

I also use the little 25mm plastic "eater" guys (forgot their name) as Raveners (Snake-like slithering fellows) based on pennies or pence, which look really great with a 6mm Epic army.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

I was planning on using 4 Exocrine (which I forgot to list) for the big biovores - they seem built for the task  :D

Love the idea of using ripper swarms for raveners - I'll have to see if I can steal a few from my local club gamers. Over half of the club have 40K Nids, someone must have a few spare rippers!
