I am still struggling to get my imperators apart for repair and rework and was wondering if using boiling water to soften the styrene may help me with the overuse of solvent cement, I know that 240F is the melting point (that's about 116C for you metric guys) and I would be dangerously close, but has anyone ever tried such a thing?

In addition the platforms are warped so I may need to do something like this anyway to flatten them?

What glue was used to assemble the models? If it was CA (superglue), you should try freezing or VERY CAREFULLY applying acetone to where the parts join. Acetone is a solvent and will eat your model if you are not careful.

If it was a poly cement, then you are best off cutting the models apart.

Thats what I was afraid of, I beliee the glue to be non-solvent poly cement like testors, and lots of it

Best of luck then. Use a sharp blade & plan those cuts carefully. A razor saw might be a plus depending on where you need to cut.

You might also get a break if the model wasn't washed before it was put together. Occaisionally, some brands of poly cement won't get too far past the surface of the model and you might be able to work the cement off the model with a knife.

yeah, my final challenge is the front towers that attach to the platform, the original builder used so much poly cement that it is pretty much totally fused. It looks like I will have to cut through the archways and remove the middle and back towers in order to get under the front towers. I can then repair it after I strip and repair the rest. Otherwise I am just going to break it at the arches anyway so I think using the razor saw will give me better results.
