Post subject:  UM Tanks - Red Trim or Not?

Hey all,

I was just looking through some old WD's looking for UM tanks for inspiration before I paint my own, and the ones in WD209 have a red trim, whereas the now up to date 40K ones don't, so do UM tanks have red trim or not???

HELP!!!!

Cheers

Chris

I have left all my UM tanks without the trim- this was a style around for 2nd ed 40k- their Whirlwinds and Razorbacks had red turrets, missiles etc.... I didn't like this personally, and as the new 3rd ed 40k studio tanks also were just straight UM Blue, I went with the "new" feel, and very nice it looks too... :;):

I think I may do red on the whirlwinds, command tanks etc. I need to paint an example...

It might look quite good on command tanks- a good idea, I just painted on some extra ensignia and stuff, but command Razorbacks w/ red turrets- a good theme. :D

-They will add some more colour- my one complaint about my UM is that they are very ...-blue-.. hehe!!

I would go with red details only for the command vehicles. And dont worry chris, UM are one of the easiest chapters to paint fast to a good gaming standard. Of course, for ?450 you wouldnt need to worry and I'd do the whole chapter for you  :D.

Alternatively I Suppose I could be kind and write an article on how I do it for the site. I'll put it on my list of things to do - got an Ork Speed Freaks painting guide to do first

Haha, I don't have that much money!!! Plus I prefer to paint my own models (have we had this conversation before? :D )

Here's how I'm going to paint them:

1) Spray Black
2) Spray UM Blue
3) Drybrush 50/50 Mix UM Blue and Skull White
4) Paint all metalic areas (Tracks etc.) in Black
5) Go over the metallic areas in boltgun metal
6) Add any extra details - UM signs Red command tanks etc.

This is just for tanks. Infantry, a similar way, but some differences (red boltguns, shoulder pad trim etc.)

What do you think?

if you are talking plastics, I would avoid the black spray, if you are going to spray UM blue, but make sure you "wash" the sprues first

Why avoid the Ultramarine blue? I always thought that using a base cote of black (or white) helps the colour (in this case blue) look better and take to the model better.

Chris

you have misread my posting

what I meant was, if you are going to use spray UM Blue then you won't need to undercoat first - the UM Blue would be the undercoat.

For a metal model, you need an undercoat, and if you were going to "paint" with a brush, then I would also undercoat, but as you are spraying blue , my view is you don't need an undercoat. Also as they are plastics, the main thing that stops paint sticking to them is the mould lubricant, hence washing them first.

I also believe (if you are going to undercoat) that a white undercoat would work better than a black one.

Therefore my recommended process would be

1) Wash sprues and let dry
2) Spray UM Blue
3) Drybrush 60/40 Mix UM Blue and Skull White
4) Paint all metalic areas (Tracks etc.) in Black
5) Drybursh over the metallic areas in boltgun metal
6) Add any extra details - UM signs Red command tanks etc.

Well, ok I see your point now. I thought black because I thought it would help for the "shadow" of the model. But come to think of it, the blue would cover the shadow, so I see what you mean now.

White instead of Black undercoat. I still think black, what does everyone else think?

I usually base coat most things in black. And I usually paint all my models in tactical colors. My UMs are mostly dark blue or Prussian blue-gray. A red, white or yellow dot or stripe for tactical markings. My BAs are Rust or Russian Brown with similar tactical markings or small armor transfers. ?I remember most of the SM2 pics had everthing painted in "circus" colors, I was "traumatized" ! :o ? Sorry guys, after my past experiences, I have to have all my stuff in tactical colors. :D

Legion-4,

What are BAs?

Everyone,

Has anyone looked in the Insignium Astartes book yet to see how the Ultramarine armor looks in that book?

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

P.S.
My Ultramarines are just plain blue with no special trim.
