OK, I have finally got around to looking at a load of Termagants towards my Epic Seeding Swarm army. I have got the base coat in a grey/blue (better than it sounds!), and I was originally going to paint the plates in blood red. But, I have had tough times with getting GW blood red to coat anything evenly. So, what alternatives are there for colours, or how can I get a good, thin, even coat in Epic red? Thanks. |

I've found that Vallejo paints cover much better. Another trick to get the red to come out would be to put a thin coat of white down first. Sometimes darker undercoats will make it hard for lighter primary colors to come out. I'm still working on my E-A Orks, but when I get back to my Tyranids, they'll have a white coat with black carapace shells that have little blue streaks. I paint fleshy areas with a dark red mix and ink them. Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak. P.S. Anyone tried doing the open wings conversions on Gargoyles yet? It seems very hard to do. |

Without seeing the actual base colour, its hard to give othr colour ideas for the armour plates. For the red covering, I would do as Maksim said. A lighter shade should allow for an even looking coat of red. When painting red over black, I find spacewolves grey (from the older pots) covers well, and lets the red really stand out and cover well too. |

You have some great mini's and scenery Jimbo. My congrats. I am in the process of getting hold of some Ork epic stuff, and I was unsure if it could look good. You have shown me that it can, I am eager now to get my paws on some. The red is nice and vibrant against the rusty metal look. It looks good, and of coarse "red wunz go fasta!"

I have a couple of problems. Firstly, I dont have Vallejo paints, and dont know where I can get hold of them in the UK. Secondly, I have found GW red paints to be universally bad. I dont know why they have such troube with red, but it always ends up being semi-transparent. This means that it needs a thick coat to work. I will try to put a highligh on my bugs and get some pictures so that you can see what they look like. I must admit that I am considering bone white as the secondary colour. Might be good. Thanks. |

Strange, I was recently considering using an oil-based paint for the carapace sections. It would cover well, and the different finish might actually work well as a contrast. I will look it up, but how well do the oil-basd paints blend and mix? I haven't use oil-based since putting together 1:72 Spitfires about fourteen years ago. (Yes, I am old.)

If the reds are coming out translucent, try drybrushing with white or gray first. That way when you paint the red over it, it will automatically be highlighted for you. I also use Tamiya red. There's another thread about them on here. |

Cyber I presume you are talking enamels (rather than oil paints which are rather different) enamels will mix together fine, but won't mix with acrylics actual oil paints take a long long (we're talking days here) to dry the main problems with enamels is that they smell, and will kill your brushes very quickly (and you need white spirit to clean them with) |

Yes, sorry, I meant enamels. I would like to stick with GW paints, perhaps the bone white is a better idea. I will try to get some pictures of the bugs here after the weekend so that we can all see what we are talking about. Thanks. |

id try anitas metallic craft paint, they can be found in good paint stores (i mean artists not b&q) seem to take well to plastics and metals, and the range is,nt too bad either, |
