From today's FW newsletter:

"Assault Rams are void attack craft, intended to participate in close-range space boarding actions, that can also act as drop-assault vessels for direct orbital attack. There are many patterns of Assault Ram in use across the Imperium, but among the Space Marine Chapters, the multi-role Caestus is the most commonplace. Smaller than either the Thunderhawk Gunship or the Shark-class Boarding Torpedo, the patterns' chief advantage is its speed and phenomenal durability which make it a highly resilient assault craft, even in the most fire-swept landing zones. Compact and heavily armoured, the Caestus Assault Ram is designed to survive direct collision with an enemy, leaving only ruin in its wake."

What do we think?

I promised Darren Parwood I'd make him one.

Please don't take away my "Ben gives an Epic scale DP model to DP" annual joke. :-(

Geek note: He took my request on giving the front doors an "overbite! Woo!" :D

That's wrapped up nice and tidy then.

I like how they tried to make a model that shows a transition from land speeder to assault boat/T-hawk. I just don't understand why the forward hull is split into 2 booms. I think it would look better if that gap was removed - and maybe narrowing the forward section in the process.

Also, I think drive section is a bit too small to do what they say it is supposed to, especially compared to the thunderbolt in that one picture. I mean, the T-bolt is roughly the same size, carries just the pilot, and has far less armament (offensive and defensive), but the ram has superior performance. I might like it better if its wing were more like the T-hawk's. That's just my two cents, though.

I wonder what the storm raven will end up looking like.

A little Thunderhawk.

Thunderbrick?! :D

Anyway, I like the idea of the Caestus, like some parts of the mini but I don't think it hangs together convincingly as a hole, it just looks awkward :-\

I like it! What tickles me about the two passenger compartments and the two doors in that particular configuration, is that it reminds me of the starting areas/corridors for Terminator squads in Space Hulk! ;)

Not sure I see much point in an Epic scale version of it though...?

Well, it's basically a really expensive, space marine version of the valkyrie that can deep strike. In other words, a combo drop pod + land raider.

I like this model. Has a lot of potential

Too bad it's 28mm and far too expensive

If this thing is supposed to be a ram, how come it doesn't have a true ram on the front of it? I really don't see something that blunt being able to penetrate into ship.

It's supposed to operate in a vacuum, with two booms decompression would cause only half of the marines to go flying out into space, as opposed to all of them.

Then again, I'm sure no one at FW thought about it that way and just thought two booms looked cooler. :P

LOL Indeed! :o ;D

Is this going to be added to any SM or Raven Guard?

Yeah... maybe a flat end with an iris hatch instead?
