Okay, I love Epic gaming and my collection currentlys consists of about 90% Orks.  Sadly, I've always been a touch hesitant of painting any of my models in fear of ruining them.   :(

Anyway, I finally found the courage to work on a bigger piece, and the only Squat piece I have, a Cyclops.  I glued it together, primed it black, and now it's sitting on my desk waiting for some paint.  (####, it looks pretty good all black...)  

The type of paint is not at issue as I have bought, for better or worse, a small variety of GW colours...  What I am looking for is some basic beginner do's and don'ts.  For example, should I thin my paint some with water? (how much water?);  where should I start?;  etc...  Any and all experiences or thoughts are appreciated.

I'll be sure to post pictures and a summary of my experiences once I'm finished in, hopefully, a couple of weeks.  Again, I appreciate any and all feedback.

Everyone says that thinning th epaint is good, and they are right. However, I normally end up not thinning, and you may find this better to start with over a black undercoat.

I find that the more highlights you do, the thinner the paint should be. The best advice is to take it slowly, dont expect too much and make sure that you clean your brushes properly.

Just get one basic colour added to start with and then take a step back and decide whether you then want to work on a second colour, or highlight the first.

Also, know when to stop. It is too easy to just keep going, and end up doing too much. A simple and well done miniature is often better than a complicated one.

I want to ecco CyberShadow's comments about knowing when to stop. I have see some great looking table top models that when looked at closely have been done with a few well placed highlights or washes and some minor detail. I have also seen some figures where someone spent time painting every last detail and the figure looks like a mess. Be honest as to what you want. I want an army that looks good on the table and that is it.

As to thin or not to thin, I have been playing with thining and I like what is happening to my figures. I would say try it on some stuff you do not care about. I bought some figures from the local store's junk box and painted them for practice. That way I did not care if they turned out and had no problem dunking them in Pine Sol if I wanted to start over  :;):

One last thing, check out this web site. It is about painting 15mm stuff but some of the ideas he offers can be used on the epic level as well.

I would not do everything he does, but some of the ideas are worth thinking about for your vehicles.

Tips:

1)  Keep your brushes damp while working.

2)  Never let the paint get up near the ferule (the metal band around the hairs) - once acrylic sets up there, it's almot impossible to get out and it distorts your brush shape.

3)  Thin the paints a bit.  You want the paint to flow in an even sheet.  If it's too thick, you will get brush lines and loss of detail.  If it's too thin, it won't cover, and it will get sucked into the cracks because of capillary action.  That's okay if you are doing a wash and using a dark color, but not for lighter colors.

There are lots of tips for advanced techniques, but I dont' see any point in posting a ton of them unless there is something specific you would like to know about.


As far as the colossus, the coolest Squat army I ever saw was black, with just a little bit of white and gold for trim and highlights.  It was a very dramatic look, plus it was probably easy as heck to do, since most whites and metallics cover well.
