I've just run out of the old style GW Brown ink.. anyone know of an ink which is close to it.. tried P3 and Vallejo but they aren't very close matches. EDIT: Just found another pot of it.. but it won't last forever, so the question still stands |

Seems I'm not the only one who likes the old inks; I stocked up on purple ink before they vanished. Cote D'arms used to make GW's paints, and do a brown ink which I think is identical to the GW one. |

I find the new washes are usually better for shading, but the inks were essential for glazing and adding colur intensity. |

Winsor & Newton Peat Brown works well, but I've never used the Citadel stuff. What is it about the older inks that makes them "work" for you? Flow, color, etc? Liquid watercolor can work in a similar way & might be worth exploring as well. |

The colour of the Brown is not to yellow or red... also it's a much more intense pigment.. so I can chose how dilute I want it.. the new washes are sometimes too thin. |

Yup, the old GW inks were characterised by very strong pigments. |

Definitely pick up a pot of the W&N & give it a whirl. You typically can't go wrong with proper art-quality goods. W&N nut brown is probably what you are looking for & the peat brown is a darker color. |

Not that it helps Ratty's problem but... I started using Tamiya clear for the lighter colored inks (yellow and orange) a while back because I thought the GW ones were sub-par. I've started replacing my other inks with Tamiya as they ran out. They are vibrant and due to the vehicle they are flexible. They can be thinned with alcohol or water or painted on straight, depending on what effect you're looking for. |

This is not too helpful, but I found out that Ogre Flesh wash is a milder, or perhaps more dilute, version of the old flesh wash. |

Yeah, the original GW brown ink in the dropper bottle was the best thing since sliced bread. If you find a viable replacement let us all know. |

I've used very strong cheap instant coffe before. it's actually a stronger pigment then most brown inks. but it needs protecting, and I've no idea what the long term look is in terms of colour fastness. (I'll have a look at one that's two and half years old tonight, but a decade?) |

As I mentioned before Cote D'Arms used to make the old, old GW paints, and still sell them under their own name, including the old, old inks. |
