I think I can call this Minervan venture a qualified success. The magnetization is super easy, and works amazingly well. The qualifications are that the replacement barrels I'd thought to use are too chubby, and the angled mantlet means drilling it level is a pain. Both relatively minor.
The tools and process. Put a magnet into the post hole on the chassis. I used clippers to remove the peg, and filed it flat. I used my scribing tool (top) to mark the center of the hole for the magnet. I then used a 1/16" bit as a guide, and then used the 5/32" bit to flesh it out. The vertical sides of the hole should only be <1mm deep, though of course the tip of the bit will be deeper. Then glue in the magnet. For the small UPV turrets, I just cut off the post and glued on the magnet, since drilling the turret would have destroyed it.
Here is the warning I am required by law to add: MAKE SURE YOUR POLARITIES MATCH! If you want things interchangeable, all your chassis and all your turret magnets need to be properly oriented. No one likes turrets that blow off as soon as you remove your hand.
You end up with this:
And this:
Two of the Magnets on the UPV Chassis weren't dry, so I left those turrets off. Which reminds me. Make sure things are dry before you start putting turrets on and making pew pew noises. The attraction between these mags will break unset superglue.
