Another long boring post without any pretty pictures.

My next army will be Minervan Legion/Ulani Tank Regiment. I know, how will anyone tell the difference from my Steel Legion, right? I'll tell you how.

First, I plan on using mostly or entirely Exodus Wars minis for this army. Some types (Basilisk, two of the three mortar carriers) I'll need to think about how to include from the EW range. Most will be converted to some degree. All will have a common chassis, and the turrets will be magnetized (oooh... magnets!). I might even go the road of casting some of the more... difficult... turrets in resin. I'm looking at you, Executioner.

Starting force will be: 1 Achilles Squadron (Tank Company), one Apollo Battery (Demolishers w/ cut down barrel), 2 Agamemmnon Detachments (Salamanders), 1 Enforcer Squadron (Baneblade Company), 3 spare Apollo turrets, and 3 spare Achilles turrets. Needless to say this is not a balanced force, but it allows me the room to work on my Leman Russ variant turrets, and is a good 1500pt+.

The main question I have is: what kind of color scheme should I use? I want to do something unconventional, yet still a somewhat muted color. My current thought is a dark blue-grey, perhaps Fenris Grey. Suggestions appreciated.

Pretty picture time!

As I wait for my EW to make it's way across the Atlantic, I thought I'd throw a test paint scheme on a spare BMP-3. I think it works out well, though it seems a little like my Steel Legion, but blue.

In particular let us know which magnets you use - I might steal your ideas for my Guild armour!

Good Ideas. This was just a slap some paint down to see if I even liked the direction job. Gotta look at where to put white on the actual models.

I've ordered 5/32" diameter x 1/32" thick discs from amazing magnets ($.09 ea). They should fit inside the posthole, and clipping off the turret post and sinking a shallow hole where it was will anchor the other. I'll keep you posted.

I'm a happy camper.

I got back home today, and found my magnets had arrived. Not having any EW models to turn them on, I used the next best thing, at least in terms of turret pegs: some spare pasta I was provided.

The 1/32" thick x 5/32" diameter magnets fit snugly into the peg hole, with a tiny amount of space left before they were flush (a good thing, less wear and tear on the magnets) and the turret peg was easily clipped and drilled for the other magnet.

I also got the brass rod neccessary for the replacement cannon, so I'm just waiting on the EW stuff, which has shipped, I'm told.

I think I can call this Minervan venture a qualified success. The magnetization is super easy, and works amazingly well. The qualifications are that the replacement barrels I'd thought to use are too chubby, and the angled mantlet means drilling it level is a pain. Both relatively minor.

Image

The tools and process. Put a magnet into the post hole on the chassis. I used clippers to remove the peg, and filed it flat. I used my scribing tool (top) to mark the center of the hole for the magnet. I then used a 1/16" bit as a guide, and then used the 5/32" bit to flesh it out. The vertical sides of the hole should only be <1mm deep, though of course the tip of the bit will be deeper. Then glue in the magnet. For the small UPV turrets, I just cut off the post and glued on the magnet, since drilling the turret would have destroyed it.

Here is the warning I am required by law to add: MAKE SURE YOUR POLARITIES MATCH! If you want things interchangeable, all your chassis and all your turret magnets need to be properly oriented. No one likes turrets that blow off as soon as you remove your hand.

You end up with this:

And this:

Two of the Magnets on the UPV Chassis weren't dry, so I left those turrets off. Which reminds me. Make sure things are dry before you start putting turrets on and making pew pew noises. The attraction between these mags will break unset superglue.
