Post subject:  Paint stripping plastic?
I know its quite easy to strip paint from metal models but is there a way of getting it off plastic?

I've got a load of SM infantry, Rhinos and Land Raiders which could do with re-painting. Some of these are my early paint efforts from about 10 years ago and some are bits i've picked up from other people.
They all suffer from the "looks like its been dipped in a paint pot" syndrome!

Personally I use Simple Green detergent as its none toxic and can be thrown down the sink when finished with.

If it's acrylic paint (water/alcohol based) and not enamel (oil based) there's a great cleaning product called "Simple Green" that can get paint off of essentially any hobby material without damaging it.

I just use their "normal" version in 1 to 1 with water and the paint peels and brushes right off after a good soak.

Simple Green, or Castrol Super Clean (now just Super Clean I think) work fine on plastics. I've had better luck with Super Clean recently. Stay away from Pinesol, oven cleaner and break fluid (some might work on plastics but there's better stuff out there).

Let the stuff sit for a day or more and use a stiff bristle brush to get the paint off.

The other popular solution is to soak the models overnight in brake fluid, after which the paint becomes soft and brushes off fairly easily.

Brake fluid isn't particularly nice stuff, though.

(And don't go putting it in your car after you've used it for paint stripping!)

The basic green one!

This link is to the uk site were you get a 1 litre bottle that I use neat for stripping models and allow some of it to be diluted as a general purpose cleaner for the kitchen etc.

See, you can even sell this to your significant other as a cleaning product!

Overpainted 6mm plastics shouldn't be any problem at all, but if they are overprimed, then you are in for some real work.  I haven't found a chemical yet that can easily strip primer without damaging the plastic.

Simple Green is also handy for getting mould release/oil off of resin & plastic prior to painting.

I like fairy power spray,

does the job in 1-2 hrs, no fumes, no need for gloves etc and I've never had a  problem.

Is Super Clean or Simple Green better? I have some E40k marines to strip soon.
