Hi to all I am new to epic Armergeddon and am trying to get to grips with painting in 6mm !!

So my question is does anyone have or no of a tutorial for painting ?? I am hoping to start painting up some mariens soon so that may be a good place to start...

Any ideas what colors? Marines are pretty easy to paint. Basecoat them, then either wash and drybrush or vice versa, then pick out the details (bolter, backback, etc).

Anyway: What army are you painting up? There's different techniques that suit some armies better than others. Also: are you looking for fast techniques to put some minis on the table quickly, or do you want the best looking results? (Not that these things are necessarily mutually exclusive, but again, it depends a bit on the army )

Fast marines are dead easy:

Get a spray a couple shades lighter than the color you want the army to be, spray the lot, block out gunz and details, use an appropriate GW wash. Highlight to taste. Do the bases. Done.

His blog got me started, I thinks he's has a style that's quick, easy, and looks pro.

As a general rule, if it works at 28mm it'll work at 6mm and washes/dry brushing can become even more effective ways to detail and define large areas with speed. If you can do NMM at 28mm, nothing stops you from doing it at 6mm, etc. Paint, practice, take pics, look at the pictures to see where to improve, paint, practice, look at other people's work to see how to improve, repeat.

One difference I noticed between 28mm and 6mm scale is that it's a good idea to make the paint slightly lighter/more pastel than you normally would. When you look at a small 6mm figure at table top/game play distance a light/pastel color stands out better and looks more 'natural'.

Also, you can sometimes get away with an almost 'painterly effect' highlighting that would look kinda sloppy on a larger figure but adds depth to a smaller scale figure.

In general, avoid applying too much detail, it makes the figures look 'fussy' and 'busy' instead of adding interest. Painting most of your minis three or four colors will give a nice unified look.

Finally, paint your figures 'assembly line' fashion. Line like minis up on a stick or piece of card, hold them with blu tack or such, prime them with spray paint, then apply your other colors, one color at a time (eg. all the guns at the same time, all the right hands at the same time, etc.)

I always base mine after they are painted. Personally I can't imagine painting any of these figures while based, but some do it and get nice results.

I have done a quick tutorial on my Chaos Marines but it's buried away at the bottom of the page.

I'll post it here for convenience.


1.The first part of the process is to stick 6 infantry bases to a spray can lid using Blue-tac. They are then sprayed silver.

2.Next I use Chaos Black to paint the shoulderpads, guns and flags. Shining Gold is used for the trim in the shoulderpads. The helmet plumes are painted according to the company colours (Blood Red in this case). The comand figures are painted in many various colours to break things up a bit.

3.The third stage is a simple wash using diluted Jo Sonja’s Carbon Black acrylic paint (or a simialr wash like Woodland Scenics Black pigment). This helps pick out all the detail of the (6mm) miniatures and dulls down the bright colours to a more realistic, battlefield look. I also paint the black and yellow stripes at this point (Golden Yellow first followed by stripes of Chaos Black).

4.The edges of the bases are painted using Graveyard Earth.

5.Finally, a thin layer of PVA glue is spread on the base and then the stand is dipped into the baseing mix (Woodland Scenics Fine Brown Ballast and Woodland Scenics Fine brown Talus). A spray of Testors Dullcote and they’re finished.

Wow, I am impressed with the number and quality of responses !!

I realy apreciate all the input you lot have given me and so quickley !!!

The example that Onyx gave was superb...And to answer Warmaster Nice I was thinking of painting my lads to about the same level as the ones in Onyx's example. I am curently off on long term sick and am happy to spend time working on some decent units !!!!

As for the coulers I am thinking of using well the base uniform will be ultramarine blue with a yellow shoulder pad (the right one). The Charictar models such as captin/ supreme comander will be yellow armer. Not sure abot anything ellse at the min as I wana see how things look (keeing in mind what Westside sed about not macking them look to busy).
