Hi everyone, getting back to Epic after a long hiatus and I'm wondering what the standard is for basing these days...for vehicles I mean. Do you guys generally base your vehicles or just finish the models sans base? I'm open to suggestions & pics or links to examples would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Ace

I think you'll find very mixed opinions on this. There's certainly a lot of people basig their vehicles these days, but personally I don't do it for anything above LV size. The main reason being that I like to be able to use my models on any gaming surface. I find it a little odd to see tanks driving around on a tiny turf of grass when on a road for example. That said basing can definitely look really nice and help enhance a model. It can also help protect some models with flimsy parts from taking damage like if the model is dropped. But it really boils down to personal preference IMO :)

I never base my vehicles,
but the Flames of War bases are -very- nice,
and, if I were starting over today,
I  probably would use such easy to find, good-looking bases

It's completely up to individuals preferences. I base mine on Warmaster bases, cut down to 2/3s or 1/2 for the smaller vehicles. I like to be able to havebase detail on them too and it makes them (and especially fragile little details like sticky-out resin lascannons) a little more durable.

I don't base vehicles. But then again I have some funny ideas about bases, such as using rounds instead of square/strip for my infantry.

The above pretty much covers it and more commentary can be found here.

Skimmer heavy forces like Tau, DE, Necrons, & Space Elfs are always better based, but I wouldn't go through the extra effort for the other races vehicles.

I base Leman Russ size tanks on small flying base round bottoms, or 40mm 40k bases if superheavies, just to make sure they don't get damaged (resin). You measure from model to model when things are on bases anyway, and doesn't make too much difference base contact wise.

I haven't actually got any epic forces at the moment :p

But I base my 6mm Dirtside vehicles. They just make them easier to move and transport. I use the small FoW bases for most vehicles and infantry, and the large for larger vehicles... Although the large bases do look a tad too big at times. I'm going to stop being lazy and try and cut them down sometime.
It makes the vehicles look so much more complete to my eyes. Also makes the infantry and vehicles fit in nicer too. I base all my vehicles now, unless they're 1/56 for 28mm that is.

Our studio forces have unbased vehicles, but my personal army is based.

We need the studio ones unbased for photos on a variety of terrain, but I base my personal ones for ease of transit (magnetised bottom of base, steel carry case).

Like Warmaster Nice, the only vehicles I base are LVs.

Thanks guys for your replies, much appreciated. I'll be working on both Eldar and IG and I agree that it makes sense to base some of the Eldar stuff. I also agree with the comment about having green bases on a different colored landscape "feeling" kind of funky sometimes...
