Question:

I am nearing completion on some of my Space Marines, and felt that the two colors just want enough.  Of course I needed more pain by requiring another layer or three, so as an experiment I threw on this yellow:

The colors I am using so far:

Vallejo Game Color Steel Grey
2 Blue Ink/1 Armor Wash/10 water glaze
VGK Orange Fire
Added to the front line: Reaper Master Series Lemon Yellow

1. Do you think its needed?
2. Is it worthwhile continuing with?
3. Should I just put a slight brown wash over the orange and call it a day?

Sorry the pic isnt the best, but hopefully it shows enough for an opinion.

And I quote the exact noise I made when I looked at the photos... "Oooo they are really nice"

The extra work is very much worth the effort they are rather lovely.

Phil, you just consigned me to another 4 hours of lining work :)

Your opinion is very valued.  My wife says the same thing but I just cant see it yet.  Maybe when I finish.

Thanks!

The two tone scheme is great on the vehicles, but the extra colour goes well with the infantry. So just do the company shoulder lining on the mk7 marines? Limits extra work a bitthen.

This is a smart looking force. I say go with the extra work. It has some great results.  :agree:

Thats what Ive managed to get done in the last 3-ish hours.  My neck and back are killing me :)

Thanks for the positive feedback.  Sorry about the glare in the photos - Im in front of a window.  These are my first 6mm models painted, and my eyes and steady hand arent what they used to be!  At this point I am striving for "table top quality" which means I am allowing a fair amount of sloppiness as long as they dont look toooo bad.

More tomorrow once Ive seen the chiropractor!

Remember you'll get an extra color or two when you flock the bases.

Or three, or four, or five :)

I just bought more flock than I'll need for the rest of my life - I got the 50cc shakers of Woodlands Scenics Fall Yellow, Fall Orange, Fall Red, and the Earth Blend.  Like "just" - I got back from the store 15 minutes ago!

I havent ever done a "pure" flock before, usually doing the drybrushed sand method on my 28mm, but Ive seen some 6mm stands that looked fine with paint and flock.

I plan on Graveyard Earth base, then 4 Earth Blend/3 Fall Yellow/2 Fall Orange/1 Fall Red blend for the bases.  I think it'll be fun.  I'll also recolor some of the trees I have so they match the bases.

Lesson I learned here:

Blended Turn and Coarse Turf dont mix easily!

This is the Woodland Scenics Blended Turf (Earth Blend T1350) and 3 Coarse Turf Fall colors (Yellow, Orange, Red).

In this photo the mix is a 1:1 Earth Blend to each of the 3 colors.  I had the red at half the quantity of the yellow, but it got lost in the mix once the Earth Blend was added.

Originally I was going to add as much Earth Blend as there was Fall colors combined, as right now it only is 1/4 of the mix.  I might add at least an extra portion and see how it looks.  It should balance out the color with more brown and green, and the Graveyard Earth undercoat should help cut the color as well.

I did stir it up a bit so you can see the Earth Blend, but the Blended Turf really settles to the bottom of the tub.  Using the mortar and pestle I bought specifically for this job, it just didnt grind the Coarse Turf down much, but in the immortal words of my wife, "It just clumps it!"

I still think its going to look great when applied to the bases of the Marines, as long as I can agitate the Blended Turf up before dipping each model.

Of course, I could have found this product first:

GF9 Flock Blend: Autumn

The price isnt super competitive, per ounce, but its much smaller in portion/cost and pre-blended...

That's going to look great!!!.

But I predict you're going to start buying WM bases for your infantry soon -- all the better to use up your massive amount of flock.

WM - War Machine?

Im currently in the market for about 2-300 bases with magnetic bottoms.  I am seriously considering Litko's 0.8mm plywood bases with the magnetic addons, but thats going to cost me about $40 USD for 200 only...not bad, all things considering, because Im feeling too lazy to cut my own bases from plasticard AND trim my own magnetic paper.

I need 20mm x 20mm, some 20mm x 30mm, and probably some 25mm x 25mm all in all.  I looked at GF9's "econobases" but theyre 3mm thick :(  Renedra's seem highly recommended but their sizes are all multiples of 15mm, which is a little odd.

One suggestion is the new venture: Shogun Miniatures.
He asks on his web not to cite the website itself without previous permission... the web address is entirely easy to guess.

Just ran into this fellow on ebay and ordered some of the flanged metal bases. He sent a nice selection, along with some samples of his magnetic bases.

I tend to prefer wooden bases because they take white glue, but his 2mm plastic bases look good.
0.15c per 40x15 magnetized base.
