Sketchup from Google is free.

Moment of Inspiration (www.moi3d.com) has a free 30 day trial period, $200 for the real version.

Blender is indeed free, but the user interface is frankly terrible.

GMAX is the free version of 3ds max, it has all the modelling functionality, so I recommend it.

download a 30 day trial of autocad 2010, then have friends of questionable morals figure out how to break the 30 day trial...This probably works for most software...not that I endorse or currently have installed programs from this questionable practice.

The upcoming version of Blender (2.5) has a much nicer interface.

It's easy, just install it on a PC with a flat BIOS battery.....if the date never changes......
