I recently ordered some really cool looking spaceships from Irregular Design's presence on Shapeways (see here http://www.shapeways.com/model.....html).

The dealio is that people (in this case, Charles Oines of ID) make 3D designs and send them to Shapeways. Shapeways then sells them to whomever orders. So far so good, yes?

Getting an account was a little clumsy, but not too hard. It took a week to get the parts made, but shipping was surprisingly fast from the Netherlands.

Their resolution is crunchy, and I don't like the results. I'm going to stay with PrintAPart.

THat's kind'a of a cool ship ...  :alien:  And there are a bunch of others too ... looks like they'd work for BFG.  Ã‚ The AFVs I saw there were less than impressive ...

ah, had I known you were giving them a shot I'd have told you to not bother. A friend of mine gave them a shot a couple of months ago with the same results as you, especially with fine detail pieces.

Well, the designs are totally cool. Charles Oines wields a mighty penis when it comes to starship design. It's just Shapeways that doesn't come through.

As a dog returneth to its vomit, so I returned to Shapeways. I had read that their Black Detail material has a more pleasing resolution, so I tried that.

And what should happen? I got my order in white, strong, and crunchy. According to the receipt the problem isn't with the manufacture, it's with their webstore, which apparently decided to turn all of my selections from BD to WSaC.

They ship really fast, though.

Gotta say I'm near compelled to become destitute after looking at the spaceships. They are so very good, its just I get all excited, get a bunch of models play a couple of starship games and become disillusioned :(

Plus no-one else it seems plays homeworld these days (and the game is great though ultimately disappointing as I don't like the build aspect - I'd like to see a shogun total war version of just battles/just build (shogun, along with terror from the deep, being my other two computer games) as the battles don't suit being mixed with construction micro fiddling).

eh... I have some components that a friend printed from them in BD and it turned out pretty weird and striated especially on really thin areas. I'm hoping to give white detail a shot though supposedly both it and black detail should be the same.

I've not used them yet, although I have uploaded a bunch of stuff. I was planning on modelling up another titan weapon or 2, then making an order. I'll post some pics etc when I do.

I'm a big homeworld fan. Got all the incarnations but mainly play HW2.

I've not tried shapeways, but E&C and I seek out detail around 0.2mm as the minimum resolution. Print a part is the current favourite I believe, due to price and accuracy.

PS. check out www.spartangames.co.uk for their upcoming Firestorm:Armada the ships are very pretty (mainly because I made them [in part at least]) but the game should also be good fun and fast to play. Releasing end of this month/beginning of december.

I thought they were yoghurts? I'll try and avoid them in future, just in case they're in disguise.

The render of that ship looks great! Otterman, any chance you could post photos of how the real thing turned out?

As an aside, Homeworld fans should check out Zandris IV's ships : Online store. I have some of his not-Kadeshi ships, they're very nice: Photo

I've also been scratchbuilding my own Kushan fleet: Photo

More pics available on my Photobucket.

Yeah, Zandris IV (Andre Khoo) is great.

I sent a Vaygr BC to Man-of-Kent for painting, which he received earlier this week. Perhaps he will grace us with WIP in his thread.
