One of the big topics in 6mm sci-fi these days is that of skeletal robots, particularly the plastic sprue promised by Wargames Factory.  And it's no secret that I'm not fond of that development.  I have faith in John Bear Ross's designs, but I have no faith in Wargames Factory to physically produce them to the standard suggested by the renders.

The problem that's never far from my mind, and that I'm reminded of when I bring up the subject, is: what else is there?  E&C's repitition of that question on Warseer is what prompted me to start this log, of sorts.  So what else is there?  We know about E&C's expedition to Nottingham; DRM's Andrayada aren't hitting the spot, apparently; scraping chaos androids off ebay isn't feasible.  I put most stock in the Exodus Wars plans for Edenite skeletons, and hopefully if I do well enough here (and if Warmaster Nice doesn't mind me so blatantly horning in on his racket) I can, er, horn in on that racket.

So what am I doing here?  What's all the hot air about?  I'm going to sculpt skeletal robots, in 6mm, the old-fashioned way.  I'm going to direct the energy of my frantic disapproval so when people ask 'what else is there?' I can say 'this'.  It's probably the biggest reason I started sculpting minis.

Firstly: the design.  Some of you might remember these from eons ago, before I walked away from them like a terminal amnesiac.

Most of those details won't translate into 6mm, but that's okay.  I like to have the concept rounded out, regardless.  Although after a couple of years I think those concepts could be rounded out a little differently.  Here's the latest set of meandering scribbles, dated today; including a heavy(ier) weapons idea with 'hunchback' ammo hopper.  I admit I was influenced by cardboard cut-outs I saw in the cinema lobby last night.

Thoughts?  Opinions?  Thinner?  Bulkier?  Sleeker?  Industrial-er?  Anything?

I like them.

I was just starting to seriously consider a Necron force and was looking at DRM.

If these were available yesterday however, I would definately go with these instead.

Good ideas! I'd like to see some shoulder pads (more not-Necron-ish), but they still look good without.  :agree:

Extremely cool- if you can pull off skeletal proportions, i'll bin my Wargames factory (no doubt) blobs! I was hoping that they'd turn out more treminatorish such as this, but you get what you're given (well I shouldn't say that as I am also trying to make my own proxycrons ;-) )

Terminators in 6mm would be fantastic... can't wait for someone to make them.

Well ... I got 18 stands of G/W C/Andys ... all of Doug/DRM's Andys ... I pre-ordered 5 sprues from WGF/JBR's Deathbots ... Tom/E/W may make some (?) in the future ... E&C showed us some 'bot greens ... now Vermis is thinking about 6mm Andys ... Did I miss any !?  Just trying to keep things straight ... :alien:  :vD  8v)

Mentioned as many as I could think of, L4.

Fattdex: Obviously the proportions will have to change for a 6mm mini, but I hope I can keep them relatively skeletal.  Could be that I find myself in the same boat as WF in that I learn the hard way about the mini-making process (inc. mouldmaking), but I think I've absorbed enough info and caution to have a decent stab at it.

No other great misgivings about the design?  Okay then, ta all.  I'll see what I can do with Kajo's shoulder pad suggestion and fiddle with a few things for my own satisfaction.  I want to see if it'll look better a little more angular, and I might have to do something with the gun.  D'you think it's a little too obvious?

Look forward to what you come up with ... :D

Here's a concept with a bit more thought behind it (a bit).

Bear in mind 6mm detail, though.  I'd be lucky to fit in three ribs on each side, for example!
Might still need another minor tweak or two, but otherwise, does it look okay?  Any quibbles?  I dont think the pelvis looks too bad but I'm not sure about it.  I tried for a vague chevron/inverted teardrop theme, although the coffin shapes on the knees and elbows might be a bit much.
More inverted teardrops on Kajo's shoulder pads.  I thought I'd try to create an impression of deltoid muscles.  I think they'll do nicely - they don't look bad, IMO; they're more bulk for the mini; and they help cover up the fact that I know bugger-all about engineering and robotics.
Still, 6mm should help with that too.

I'm off to google a load of heavy machine guns and stuff.
