Well I finally got my 8 imperial fist land raiders finished tonight. Since it seems I'm no longer really doing just IG and I can't edit the title of the thread I'm starting over with a more general title.

Perhaps the IG infantry company will be next :)

mmm...i'm just starting on my crimson fists; how did you achieve the weathering? Especially on the tracks but the body as well; just drybrushed metal?

Excellent work. Yellow can be painted in so many ways, but you've hit a really nice naturalistic and "industrial" finish  :cool:

The yellow is actually pretty simple to do. I base coated the model white, then painted on a single coat of sunburst yellow. After that dried I liberally slathered the new gryphone sepia wash over the model and use the brush to pic up the excess. After that dried I did a little drybrush of white for highlights and then a second with sunburst yellow again to tone it.

I'm not overly happy with the washes since they tend to be rather annoying at times. If you don't catch them quick enough they puddle in teh wrong spot and ridge when you try to fix it. I'm thinking of trying a text with a brown ink and then scab red wash on a test mini to see how that works.

The weathering on the tracks is pretty simple. just take an old brush and dip it straight in graveyard earth, blot off a little of the paint and start globbing it on the tracks. then pick out and do the same thing with scorched brown to make a more wet mud appearance. I tired drybrushing on one and it really doesn't work well for teh chipped paint. I took boltgun and just went over a few edges where it would chip or where from use like the hatches, plate edges, the front of the assault ramp etc.

Well next up on the list were 4 dreadnoughts. Got these finished up in good order tonight and they will wait on good weather and two lance dauntless before getting sealed though.

Same technique, but with a catachan wash over it to attempt to make a bit more ocher shading.

after the lackluster performance of my fine detail brush at this scale, I got a new brush to do the chapter symbol and lettering. Works great and I was even able to add text lines to the purity seals.

Your weathering technique on them is impressive. Amidst all of that weathering you still managed to keep it neat and crisp. That's not so easy to do. So well done! I do have a question though. You mentioned having a problem with your fine detail brush. I too have been having problems finding a brush that will allow me to paint chapter symbols. I use to do it all of the time, but I guess my current brushes just aren't up to the task. Could you tell me what brush you are using for your fine detail work?

Malakai: I've tried several different versions. Stay away from painters touch 18/0. it's a very fine point brush bit the bristles are too short causing paint to dry and splay the bristles. I tried the American Painter size 0 brush next and it's quite good. It was used for the freehand on my titan's leg, but when I tried to do the symbol on the raiders it had too large a tip for the detail I wanted. For these guys I used the American Painter 5/0 which seems a very good brush. It has longer synthetic bristles that are stiffer than natural and keeps the paint away from the top of the brush. I also have the 10/0 I've yet to try. Bascially for fine detail I use synthetic bristles because of their stiffness and look for longer bristles so so there is less chance that paint will dry in the top and splay them.
