Looks cool. Any experiences with it out there in Epic land?

Edit: Clarification, looks like the shade is a dip and the primer is a spray. That makes more sense.

I've used one of the sprays as an undercoat. Works as well as the GW ones (just don't use it when it too hot, but I'm sure you all wouldn't make such a rookie mistake  )

Got the matt varnish spray to try later this week too.

I've also used the sprays and they seem quite nice (although I've only used them on terrain). I found them quite 'grainy' (perhaps I sprayed from too far away) so they act as a nice key to subsequent coats but they might be a bit rough for really nice detail. They also seem to spray a little more randomly than the GW ones (they can be a bit 'liguidy' out of the nozel. Having said that, I've go plans to use them on some Warhammer stuff soon as the colours are very handy. I'll be interested to see how that goes.

The dips that they do seem to work well from the examples I've seen on the Warhammer Forum.

I have got the dip but not used it yet, have seen examples in the 'flesh' and it looks really great.

I have been told it works better if you undercoat white, the base colours are brighter.  The light and mid shades appear to be the best I would guess that the dark shade would be too dark for Epic, but that depends on what look you are looking for.

Certainly sounds interesting ... but as some said, I don't know if it would work well for Epic infantry ?  Well you Boyz let us know how it goes !  Could make things easier if it works !

Indeed. I await testing with interest. One of the main reasons I have struggled to finish painting Epic armies is that with my declining eyesight I really struggle to paint Epic infantry. I find painting 28mm to be hard work but 6mm really stretches my eyesight.

If the basecoat and dip method world on Epic infantry you might have just ressucitated my Epic painting.

Never tested the dipping thing, but i've successfully tested the blue and red spray (my bfg stuff or the 28mm world eaters posted on this board are painted with this).

wargame_insomniac: that's funny, I just think the opposite. I get back to the hobby after a 6 years break thanks to netepic, and painting 28mm minis is damn loooonnng, I can paint 2 or 3 epic company while I just paint a chaos marine squad :/

I obvious;y need to relearn to paint in different scale then!! I enjoy painting Epic tanks but Epic infantry are just too small!! I have some half painted Blood Angels that need finishing off once I get the confidence to resume.

I've been getting pretty excited about a black primer then a (blind) white drybrush: seems to do a very nice job of setting up for a lighter-colored stain, while also revealing to me details that I wouldn't otherwise see.  

The cool thing about drybrushing is that you don't really have to see what you're painting.

I agree with Carrington,

Epic infantry are very easy if you drybrush.

I spary black and drybrush my may uniform colour, grey for my original IGs, then pick out the details, faces,hands,weapons, bodyarmour and patches.  It all depends on how far youi want to go but the mass effect is effected.  

Not sure about Army Shade on the infantry then but vehicles and flyers would look great.

Will try it when i get home in three weeks.

You can really fastly paint Epic infantery this way:

- undercoat black or grey
- dry brush and basically paint faces, guns etc...
- wash the whole mini with dark wash/liquid pigments (Citadel washes/Onyx Woodland Scenic tips/Michael Kan Liquitex Payne's Grey), you can even drop the whole stand in wash
- once the wash is heavily placed, blow (with your mouth or with a "hair dryer"?)from the top of the mini to make the wash flows downside the mini, to get less wash on the top of the mini and more at bottom (just like if the ligh is coming from the top of the mini). The wash will darkly shade all deep details of the minis and will act as a filter on the drybrushed details, it will hide the dirty effect of drybrush.
- let the wash dry (may take few hours) and highlight some details like guns etc...

As the Army Painter Shades are basically wood varnishes, keep in mind that you'll never probably be able to strip the minis once it's dry. On my side, I use WS liquid pigments and dilute them with a mix of Pebeo mat acrylic medium and few drop of alcohol.

As an alternative to dips, and following Scream's tips above, I'd recommend trying out the new citadel washes. They're nothing like their inks (which I like) and act rather like dip but are thinner in consistency and perhaps better suited to 6mm work.

I'm "experimenting" with Woodland Scenics pigments ... based on SrCeaMs recommendations ... works pretty good. I've usually do a good black wash a lot of times, anyway !

Agreed, here is a command stand i've painted last year only with 3 blue drybrush on black spray coat, then details added:



Of course, if you take time to use some washes and highlights, it's better, but it takes more time.
