Post subject:  Infantry and Eldar conversion advice

Dear all,

I have some quick questions which I am sure many of you have faced before.

1st - What is the best way of repainting infantry that is already plastic glued to bases, both 20x20 and 10x40? Particularly the old Eldar guardians, I have loads of them that are rather blobbily painted when I was like 14, and have other things like wraithguards, or 5 old exarchs, on the square bases that I never painted. I am anticipating difficulties when doing these (to say the least). Is the best way just to accept that they are not going to look great, or is there a way of getting them off the bases? This leads to my second question:

2nd - What is the best way of getting figures such as warlocks, farseers, etc off bases to put them in with say guardians or Exarchs with aspect warriors? Or do you just proxy so 5 farseers on one base is just one farseer stand? How about autarchs?

3rd - Has anyone here converted up some Shining Spears? Is it best to use the old jetbikes, or vypers, and does anyone have any advice as to what to use?

Thanks in advance.

I've found getting figures off square bases  pretty easy - if you snip themtowards the centre with GW or other snippers until you have figures on small bases it's quite easy to whittle at the figures until they come free  - the last lot I did seemed to 'pop' off the broken bases. I think it's because of the different types of plastic involved - the old bases are pretty a hard brittle plastic. Patience and time are needed though!

As for repainting etc, I've not tried that.

I have heard tell of someone using jetbikes and howling banshee bodies for shining spears. I didn't see the results. Stompzilla? You about?

Blobby painting is never going to look right unless you strip it completely.  Personally, I'd rather just buy new figs, but there should be a pinned thread on stripping.

Removing figs depends on how they were glued.  Superglue has weak sheer strength, so if they were superglued, you should be able to twist them to break the bond.  A pair of needle-nosed pliers and a gentle touch should get them out intact.

If you used model glue, they're stuck.  You can either snip them off at the feet and glue them to a flat base or cut the existing base apart.  Either way is labor intensive and each has its own problems.

Remove as above.  Personally, I left all my warlock stands intact as farseer units.  I left the old Exarch stands intact as Swooping Hawk exarchs and built exarchs for other aspects from scratch, e.g. adding a daemonette claw to a scorpion unit as the exarch.

I haven't, but people have posted pics of jetbikes with just lances added to them and they look fine.  Wire for the lance and a tiny bit of green stuff for the tip and it's done.

Using a very sharp knife, slice under the feet to get it off the base, making sure you apply the force towards the base, so if done correctly, you end up with a wafer thin slice still sticking to the feet which can be easily cleaned up.

Then depending if you have any spare epic bases, use super glue or any glue that doesn't melt plastic to stick them back on. I found a superglue gel that is perfect for this job.

If you need some spare epic bases, I have plenty from my Tyranid Troops, so PM me if you need some.
