So I need the advice of all the awesome uber-painters here (Onyx, Mark, etc.) I'm painting up an Ulthwe army and was wondering what is a good ink wash for a mostly all black mini? I've implemented the Woodland Scenics black wash for my Blood Angels, I'm going to "borrow" Onyx's idea of the silver primer and burnt umber rusty look for my orks. But the Ulthwe I'm just not sure of. I was think of a grey to hopefully highlight, or maybe a brown to give a dirty feel, but thought I'd enlist the advice of the community as a whole. |

If you want maybe try adeptus battlegrey (the really dark grey foundation paint) washed with badab black? This will give a stupidly dark grey as opposed to solid black so that you can still make out details. and if you have any metallics it'll shade them as well ![]() |

Should have asked this question a week ago, all my infantry have been done and in the case for a month, and the armor has all been base coated black, and the production line of bleached bone has been applied to everything. Now need to do the same for my red gore on weapons, blue for windscreens, turqoise for engines, then some drybrushed boltgun for engine intakes. |

Thanks for the mention...  ![]() Unfortunatly, I'm not really sure what I would do in your situation. The only washes I've done over black were for a rust/dirt effect (Raw and Burnt Umber). The gray sounds interesting. It could be a sort of reverse shading effect (usually the recesses would be darker than the exposed areas). My only advice would be to trial some spare minis with a few different techniques and go with what looks best to you (thats how I do most of my stuff). Hopefully Mark_Logue has a few ideas (having actually painted an Ulthwe army). olly's idea sounds excellent, pity it's already too late to give it a try... D'oh! Cheers mate, Steve. |

I drybrushed grey over a black undercoat then used the old GW inks on them. I haven't tried the new inks but I imagine you would be able to achieve the same effect. Basically you end up with a black model with grey highlights so it actually has definition. See http://www.tacticalwargames.net/forums....21;st=0 for pictures and probably a more detailed description of painting techniques at some point. |

I just drybrushed grey lightly on black models. It gives enough for such small models and is a lot faster to paint without needing inks to dry. ![]() |

Come to think of it, I painted my Black Templars exactly as Mark described (except I used Woodland Scenics Black pigment to do the wash). Good luck with your DCD, looking forward to the photos! |

As soon as I get a camera worth anything, I'll snap away. I like Mark's idea, but the SO has me on the pre-fall re-organization/buying furniture/she feels the need to nest so I have to help/home improvement schedule lately. But hopefully I have tomorrow to paint. |
